Story
Jonathan Taplin’s extraordinary journey has put him at the crest of every major cultural wave in the past half century. His is a lifetime marked not only by good timing but by impeccable instincts - from the folk scene of Woodstock, to Hollywood’s rebellious film movement and beyond, Taplin is not just a witness but a lifelong producer, the right-hand man to some of the greatest talents of both pop culture and the underground. The Magic Years is both a rock memoir and a work of cultural criticism from a key player who watched a nation turn from idealism to nihilism.

Taplin appears oblivious to the diversion of the sixties anti war movement into sex, drugs mass music performances. This is difficult to grasp given Taplin's family, education and apparent intelligence. With such role cultural role models he does make it more easy to understand the 'behaviors' of the generation after these boomers. Taplin is on a meme now of the digiatl oligarch's power in the US and their split from the populace. He lived in and describes the appropriation of folk and mountain music by some of his icons. Even though present he doesn't get it after all these years.

As Morgan Stanley's chief Asia specialist, getting Asia right is Stephen Roach's personal obsession, and this in-depth compilation represents more than 70 of Roach's key research efforts not just on Asia, but also on how the region fits into the broad context of increasingly globalized financial markets. The book argues that the "Asia factor" is not a static concept, but rather one that is constantly changing and evolving.

For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it. America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.

Doom for them, salvation for us
Reviewed: 07-12-22
Zeihan has given us a maniacal Nietzshean nearly proto Fascist view of the world's and the US' future. He is as brilliant and forceful at times as Nietzshe ever was. Likewise his political sympathies are as favorable to corporate fascism as any proto Nazi would be. These are apparently harsh and inflammatory allegations I admit but they are in the cast of his own style. Zeihan's 'propheies' are as some say about America that it has a religion without God and a Christianity without Christ. His apocolype is likewise doom without resurrection. Lose all hope who enters here he might have above the title.

Story
In Disunited Nations, geopolitical strategist Peter Zeihan presents a series of counterintuitive arguments about the future of a world where trade agreements are coming apart and international institutions are losing their power. Germany will decline as the most powerful country in Europe, with France taking its place. Every country should prepare for the collapse of China, not North Korea. We are already seeing, as Zeihan predicts, a shift in outlook on the Middle East: it is no longer Iran that is the region’s most dangerous threat, but Saudi Arabia.

The state of the world according to a genius
Reviewed: 02-21-21
No irony here. Zeihan reflects the genius of the great minds as for example in the Great Books: Aristotle, Plato, Dante. Peter's prior two books show also much if not most of this unique ability. Most gripping is the last chapter written in 2020 where Peter refers to the wolves at the door and the overwhelming aspects of what he sees before us. Peter appears to be overwhelmed. Most curious is that there is no mention of the virus. Rather his summation appears incoherent and disoriented Prepared to be shocked by this change from Peter's usual overflowing optimism and confidence. His bedrock theme up until this end word had been that the US is exempt and protected from the coming disasters. There is in this new tone an uncertainty that in the case of the pandemic this is the case.

A literary great introduces Lucifer to moderns
Reviewed: 05-18-20
This is a must read for anyone sensing evil in our world whether it comes from a spiritual or simply the material sense of smell emanating from our institutions. The 'stories' are fact based narratives that Martin developed from tapes and interviews of those involved with exorcisms. Each story begins with a 'deal' with the devil to be a servant in return for something material and usually big depending on the imagination of the person. The author was made infamous from his observations concerning the inner sanctums of the Vatican and the deals some high up in them made with Lucifer. Read the Book of Job and it makes more sense. The pornographic details are dirty and disgusting; they present a realistic demonic aspect of pornography and are meant to show the true source of this influence on America and the west. I hope other works of Martin are brought to Audible such as Windswept House which is a really great American novel greater than Gone with the Wind which is echos.

In The Accidental Superpower, international strategist Peter Zeihan examines how geography, combined with demography and energy independence, will pave the way for one of the great turning points in history, and one in which America reasserts its global dominance. No other country has a greater network of internal waterways, a greater command of deepwater navigation, or a firmer hold on industrialization technologies than America.

A Cringeworthy Read
Reviewed: 10-22-19
This is an indispensable read. At first blush this book introduces startling realism into the discussion of America's role in the global environment. The bottom line however is that Zeihan has discovered America. This is the America lost to us in the last several generations concerning our country's great blessings and good fortune. Zeihan's description comes as a revelation. It was all well known in times past but became buried in layers of doubt, confusion and guilt since the end of WWII. Zeihan's reading and rhetoric is sharp and accurate; it is also nearly amoral and arrogant. If this offends you stay with it. It does represent the thinking of our elites.

Excellent Course; Particularly as Review

Link between empirical science, math, philosophy
Reviewed: 08-04-19
Buried somewhat in this lengthy course are key connections between lab science, calculus, and clearly defined concepts connected to modern philosophy and the its focus on clear terms. A review of the PDF is necessary for selected chapters to get an understanding of the simple terms and their very complex non intuitive but precise relationships. For me this course is a return to the branch of engineering and science and 'common sense' understandings that propelled the early years of the scientific historical moment. My only complaint for an otherwise excellent intellectual performance is Grossman's diction and elocution, or lack of them really. These are easily corrected defects that several listenings, required for me in any case, corrects nicely.

Few people had a more profound effect on Christianity in the 20th century than G. K. Chesterton. The Everlasting Man, written in response to an anti-Christian history of humans penned by H.G. Wells, is considered Chesterton’s masterpiece. In it, he explains Christ’s place in history, asserting that the Christian myth carries more weight than other mythologies for one simple reason—it is the truth.
