Story
A century after it first appeared, Crime and Punishment remains one of the most gripping psychological thrillers. A poverty-stricken young man, seeing his family making sacrifices for him, is faced with an opportunity to solve his financial problems with one simple but horrifying act: the murder of a pawnbroker. She is, he feels, just a parasite on society. But does the end justify the means? Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov makes his decision and then has to live with it.

Depression is serious and it’s definitely subjective but I just couldn’t feel her pain. I’ve been told I’m extremely empathetic, to a fault. As someone who has suffered from clinical depression for most of my adult life I jumped at the chance to listen to this book thinking I might find it relatable. I listen to memoirs on a loop. Usually females, who have overcome and survived situations and circumstances that most people would deem unsurvivable. Situations that threaten to crush one’s spirit and destroy the soul. This author could have saved herself a lot of heartache by hiring a housekeeper and a good nanny!!!! Problem solved.

In this sweeping narrative, Elliott weaves the story of Dasani’s childhood with the history of her ancestors, tracing their passage from slavery to the Great Migration north. As Dasani comes of age, New York City’s homeless crisis has exploded, deepening the chasm between rich and poor. She must guide her siblings through a world riddled by hunger, violence, racism, drug addiction, and the threat of foster care.

An Important Book
Reviewed: 12-30-21
This was a gut wrenching story but one of many hundreds of thousands that needed to be told. The narration was spot on. The listener does not need to hear a tougher sounding Brooklyn/NY accent to feel and imagine the utter despair and hopelessness of parents who cannot provide for their children, or of children being scattered far and wide from the only parents they've ever known. The narrator's sardonic manner throughout the book is a perfect representation of a broken system that continues to be broken year after year, decade after decade as history continues to repeat itself. All of which, by the way, is no accident!

No Happy Endings is an audiobook for people living life after life has fallen apart. It’s an audiobook for people who know they’re moving forward, not moving on. It’s an audiobook for people who know life isn’t always happy, but it isn’t the end: There will be unimaginable joy and incomprehensible tragedy. As Nora reminds us, there will be no happy endings - but there will be new beginnings.

It's A Memoir
Reviewed: 04-03-20
After listening to this honest, candid, self deprecating and sometimes very funny memoir, I was compelled to take a second look at some of the bad reviews. Well good golly gosh, maybe it's just me but I think if a young mom, with a baby merely months old is forced to watch her equally young, loving husband suffer a catastrophic diagnosis and die a long, painful, drawn out death then maybe, just maybe she has earned the right to talk about herself and her life just a bit. Don't you think so? And ok...so maybe that kind of suffering does not automatically give you a free pass to share your life experiences...I get it. So how about this...is it fair to say that when one purchases a memoir (please note that the first two letters in memoir happen to be "me") there is a strong possibility that the author is going to write about his/herself? I'm truly stricken by how mean spirited and unkind some members of the human race can be.
Please don't get me wrong. It's perfectly fine to disagree with or even express one's dislike for a book and it's contents but to insult a person who has shared her pain over the loss of a beloved husband by calling her pathetic and narcissistic is unforgivable.

This was worse than bad. Completely misses the mark on mystery and suspense. I've been duped. I tried...I really did...for 7 hours!!! But just couldn't go on. This is 'The Lovely Bones' meets 'Kiss The Girls' and not nearly as good as either. The author needs to do himself a favor and make use of some of that embalming fluid!!!!

Could Not Finish
Reviewed: 02-17-19
After searching tirelessly for my next good read, I settled on this one. I'm the type that likes to get hooked on a book right from the start so when this started out with a sister missing after a drive home, late at night, truck found on the side of the road, yadda, yadda, yadda, I thought I'd struck gold. But good grief...that kind of start can't carry the whole story. The book has to progress, unfold, and continue to hold your attention. About half way through, I could bare the tedium no longer. I kept waiting and waiting and waiting for something more. This book was soooo boring. Another reviewer stated that they didn't care what had actually happened to Sarah and neither did I. My greatest worry is, how soon can I get a refund!

The dead talk - to the right listener. They can tell us all about themselves: where they came from, how they lived, how they died, and, of course, who killed them. Forensic scientists can unlock the mysteries of the past and help serve justice using the messages left by a corpse, a crime scene, or the faintest of human traces.

I loved this book. Yes the narrator's accent was heavy and one or two words were difficult to understand but that did not detract from this intriguing listen. I was captivated and often found myself replaying certain parts just so I wouldn't miss any detail and to better understand the various judicial systems around the world. I grew up in London and remember, vividly, one of the cases mentioned in this book. I had no idea that it had been retried and a different verdict from the original one had been handed down. An excellent, enlightening listen!!!! Bravo!!!
