Story
May, 1989. The two nuclear superpowers are finally talking peace, but not everyone in the Soviet Union seeks such resolution. Senior Soviet ministers and generals conduct a coup to seize power and prevent the dissolution of the USSR and the Warsaw Pact. To cover up their plot and capitalize on the resulting chaos, they invade West Germany, setting off a chain of events and the Third World War. Across Europe, soldiers and spies are drawn into the conflict. From NATO headquarters to the front lines, the information is there to prevent nuclear annihilation if only they can find it in time.

Good story of what wasn't. Thankfully.
Reviewed: 03-25-25
The reader did a mostly good job, but should have studied up on how to say unit and equipment names and not read them verbatim, but overall it was a good tale. Having been in during this particular era it was nice to revisit early capabilities or lack thereof, that warfighters take for granted now. Also to see mistakes that were learned in Desert Storm, though I cant say for sure all of the tactics were accurate for the time. I'll have to reread Team Yankee and World War III again and compare how it stands up to them.

Fantastic tale of luddite time travel. Will have to give it a second listen to see if it's all tied together, and recapture some details. Enjoyable distraction.

Really enjoyed this story and it's "pulpy" feel from the perspective of a newspaper man instead of a hard boiled detective or Private Eye. I don't read many mysteries so it was intriguing enough for me and not too predictable.

On a scorching September day in 1942, the Special Air Service (SAS), a special forces unit of the British Army, pulled off one of the most daring, top-secret ruses of the Second World War. The plan (sanctioned by Churchill): cover a grueling 2,000 miles of the Sahara desert to attack German general Erwin Rommel's seemingly impregnable port fortress in North Africa from the rear to break free and arm more than 30,000 Allied POWs.

An excellent book overall. A great build up and introduction to various characters from different branches of British Special Services, SAS, SIG, SOE, and Commandos. it regails some of their early exploits and and background on the concept and creation of SIG. Then it shift to one of the most audacious missions of WWII, retake Tobruk.

cut and paste staccato reading
Reviewed: 03-09-24
I'm having trouble listening to this book as many of the sections sound cut and pasted. There is no rythm or flow to the reading with many inserted pauses that take the reading out of context. It seems like the reader was using AI to string his words together instead of reading the book. A serious disservice to the author and the work as there is a wealth of information but the reading is one of the worst I've come across on Audible.

Good combat action, poorly researched history. Sealous Scouts were Rhodesians, not South Africans, and ceased to exist five years after the antagonist's birth year. It was impossible for him to have been a colonel in the Rhodesian Army at five. Not to mention any of his mercs who were called Sealous Scouts would be well into their 60s and 70s in the book's setting. It would have been better to have done a little research to see what actual threats are out there at the global level or create a new one from whole cloth.
