feels like nothing is accomplished. like filler. 70% of this book is a single dungeon and the book ends as soon as it's completed. Still constantly repeating things chapter to chapter. there is a story this series is allegedly working towards but then we get a book like this where the main party is still split, we get no progress at all on that front and a few chapters of catchup so we don't forget they exist.

Lucky (or unlucky) enough to be chosen as an apocalypse himself, Zeke sets off to [Devour] his way to the top! It wouldn't be so bad, but his best friend's out to kill him, that rock has a gun, and everything, literally everything, has gone to hell. a tough listen.

I think for certain people this book is a hit, but I am not one of them. The story feels so secondary to the character's physical growth and anatomy and it just drags on and on in excruciating detail. I was so desperate for just a single actual conversation between two characters when I realized I was like 12 hours into the book and the MC had only communicated with something one time. the entirety of the book is just him changing his body, thinking about changing his body, or walking while experimenting with his changed body.
the author has a second character there with him but of course they can't talk to each other, so sure make her blind and crippled and traumatized so that she can't offer any proper insight to balance the MC's inhuman perspective.
it's well written, the world is interesting, the narrator does a great job but the material is just so frustrating. all that world building and interesting details held just out of reach because the dog needs to consider his finger length and the intricacies of tendon to muscle ratios.
the ending is also very unsatisfying after 16 hours of slow buildup.

it's a fine book if you like he who fights with monsters. the similarities are honestly a bit too close for comfort but it's a fun listen and worth the purchase. looking forward to see if the author can find a way to differentiate this series from HWFWM as he continues writing future novels.

very irritating character. waffles back and forth and can't seem to understand anything he is told even seconds after it's said making everything need to be repeated. makes it seem like the author thinks we are stupid. vocal performance is excellent.

I really want to like this. I enjoyed the first few books but this will definitely be my last in this series. I really hoped the constant, unending introspection and whining would simmer down but we are 4 books in and every single decision the protagonist makes is STILL bookended by endless wishy washy whining. second guessing every choice, every action. it's exhausting. I don't want to skip so much, but by the half way point I couldn't stand hearing the internal monologue every 15 minutes. Narration is great though.

there are a lot of similarities between this and are who fights with monsters, as well as things that seemed taken directly from the game elden ring. it's a good book but it really stood out to me how it was just a little too similar to be simply inspired by.

this book has pacing issues that are tough to ignore. I don't need to hear the characters every single thought about every single possible action. in the midst of what should be a 5 minute conversation the protagonist will have 15 minutes of introspection and thought.
tons of pronunciation issues in the narration as well but it isn't that bad performance is fine overall.
honestly I have skipped through a ton of this book 30 seconds at a time and missed nothing from the story overall.
