About this listen

New York Times best-selling author Jason Pargin’s hilarious and horrifying John Dies at the End series continues with If This Book Exists, You’re in the Wrong Universe.

"Pargin once again delights with scathing social commentary thinly disguised as an outrageous action novel.... This is a feast." (Publishers Weekly)

If the broken neon signs, shuttered storefronts, and sub-standard housing didn’t tip you off, you’ve just wandered into the city of “Undisclosed”. You don’t want to be caught dead here, because odds are you just might find yourself rising from the grave. That hasn’t stopped tourists from visiting to check out the unusual phenomena that hangs around our town like radioactive fallout. Interdimensional parasites feeding on human hosts, paranormal cults worshipping demonic entities, vengeful teenage sorcerers, we’ve got it all.

Did I mention the possessed toy? It’s a plastic football-sized egg that’s supposed to hatch an adorable, colorful stuffed bird when a child “feeds” it through a synchronized smartphone app. What’s actually inside is an otherworldly monstrosity that’s enticing impressionable wayward youth into murdering folks and depositing their body parts inside the egg as if it’s a hungry piggy bank to trigger the end of the world.

That’s where Dave, John, and Amy come in. They face supernatural threats so the rest of us don’t have to—and sometimes even earn a couple of bucks to so do. But between the bloody ritual sacrifices and soul-crushing nightmares, our trio realizes this apocalypse is way above their pay grade.

Fantastic

I’ve never read a book of this genre before. Unfortunately I started with this book not knowing it was a series. Thankfully despite it being a series each book seems to be stand alone. Well written, exciting, and humorous. I can’t wait to read the others!

Jason Pargin always delivers!

I have not been let down once by this author, and hope he continues this series. You really never know in which direction any of the “John Dies at the End” books will go. It’s expectably unexpected every time. I often describe these books as Scooby Doo meets Rick and Morty, meets H.P. Lovecraft, meets Gravity Falls, meets (Jay and Silent Bob maybe?). I would highly recommend this series to anybody and impatiently wait for the next book.

They're back and this story is DaFilthy!

He does it again. These characters are like old friends. There's the regular cast, and Joy Park is back, because John has to have an extradimensional roommate made up of alien roaches. Amy needs glasses, John is trying to get "dafilthy" into the language, David is taking antidepressants. All they want to do is stream their haunted dolls and rake in the money.

Unfortunately, a toy egg likes human teeth and eyeballs, and a teenager has a book with a portal in it. They cant catch a break.

One review mentions the quality of the recording. I have had no issue with the recording. The narration is familiar and I'll probably go back and listen to all 4 books again, even though I just finished the first 3 again in anticipation of this release. You can always count on David, John, and Amy to be weird and wonderful.

Longtime reader, ready to read more

As a long time fan of this series, this is another amazing entry. Like the previous volumes, Pargin expertly camouflages serious psychological issues and existential questions with absurd humor and terror.

a Worthy Successor

loved this book! if you are a fan of the John, Dave, and Amy series this holds true to the older books. Jason/David has not lost his touch in the slightest. this gives me hope that this series will not only survive but thrive. I am glad that they got Stephen Thorne to narrate his voice gives these books a feel. I will be listening to this one many times and is definitely one of my new favorites.

Fantastic blend of comedy and horror.

The continuity of the story is brilliant even though you don't technically need to read the other books to understand what's going on. But if you like a good mix of graphic violence and gonzo humor, you won't find anything better. The author is really great about tying up all the loose threads--no matter how small--and the ending, like the other books in the series, is very satisfying. I'm looking forward to joining this group on another adventure in the future.

If this review exists, I loved this book

I’ve been following this series and the writing of Jason Pargin for a few years now and I have to say this is probably my favorite so far. The humor is top notch as usual and the narrator brings it all to life expertly. And the writing in this one is full of heart and absolutely d-filthy. Highly recommend.

Let your ears get used to the narrator

Great book. Jason still has it. The narrator took a bit to get used to. After a while, he grew on me and by the end, I was enjoying his voice. I still encourage reading the book though. There are some visual tricks Jason's writing sometimes.
