Story
Dr. Renee Caisson knows there are worse things than an attractive man in uniform drafting her into a secret government project—especially when Major Jackson makes it clear that he isn’t bothered by her questionable past. But when her labs come back with decidedly odd results, the Major is forced to come clean over who the government is actually studying. Renee is shocked to learn her subjects are demonic-looking beings who call themselves “Neighbors”—refugees from a dying world, who arrived during the nation-wide solar eclipse.

Loved the story, and the narration was good, but it was hard to hear without my earbuds, even at high volume. The narrator herself did an excellent job with voice ces and the Neighbors' trilling language.

I first read this book as a freshman at University. I loved it. I related to Jane. I reveled in the melancholy, felt all the first love feels, wondered if I would ever love so hard that I tossed everything I'd ever known to the winds.
Now, I really just want to give myself a good shake and yell "Get over yourself" at me. And Jane. the cringe factor is so real with her. I can't imagine.
The whiny narrator didn't help.

I have been a fan of BrandoSando since he knocked it out of the park with A Memory of Light. This book just sealed that fandom for me. Unfortunately, the next arc isn't coming out until 2033 or something and I am shooketh because I need MORE.
As per usual my favorite narrators were on point and kept me riveted.

Stalled
Reviewed: 08-29-24
Stalled because stupid. I really wanted to like it but WTH? And do not get me started on the narrator. I had to slow the thing to .75 to understand her.
The premise was great but the god-awful narration and the weird plot holes that make no sense. The characters obviously hate each other (or that's how they speak), Link's/Lynx's need to keep all these secrets from Quinn even though he's the one who dragged her there to save the place...Make it make sense cos it just don't.
And why is my favorite character a bench?
Zero stars if I could. Stalled and returning.

Story
Petra Grady has known since adolescence that she has no talent for magic—and that’s never going to change. But as a sweeper first-class, she’s parlayed her rare ability to handle dross—the damaging, magical waste generated by her more talented kin’s spellwork—into a decent life working at the mages’ university. Except Grady’s relatively predictable life is about to be upended.

This Has to Get Better
Reviewed: 04-12-24
This is going to get better. It must. Because I want to keep reading the series in spite of some really annoying personality choices KH made with the main character and her nemesis and sidekicks, not to mention the sheer complexity of the world-building.
Also...Pluck. And also...Pluck. Like...WTF! I did not need ANY of that even if I called it when it happened. IYKYK
There were also some glaring continuity mistakes that I don't recall KH making in The Hollows but it has been a while since I read those novels so maybe this is par for the course as she gets into another world.
The idea is good. I wish the execution was better. I feel like this one got away from KH before she had a good grasp on things.

The story went a little longer than I think it needed to. I enjoyed the story and enjoyed the characters. Although there were times when I wanted to give several people a good slap. I'm also not exactly sure what happened, because so much happened and so much didn't happen... It was just a lot. Max Gladstone is known for having a lot going on but this was everything everywhere all at once as a book and it made me tired. I had to stop reading it for a while and then come back but I'm glad I did.

Zapp Branigan Didn't Get a Show For a Reason
Reviewed: 01-21-24
I've tried to read this twice. Complete waste of a credit. The story is boring, the characters are insipid, and there was nothing about it that made me care. Zapp Branigan didn't get his own show because half an hour of his misogynistic, sexually harassing, idiotic nonsense once or twice a season was enough.

Story
For one bright, shining moment, Tybalt, King of Cats, had everything he had ever wanted. He was soon to set his crown aside; he had married the woman he loved; he was going to be a father. After centuries of searching for a family of his own, he had finally found a way to construct the life of his dreams, and was looking forward to a period of peace—or at least as much peace as is ever in the offing for the husband of a hero. Alas for Tybalt and his domestic aspirations, fate—and Titania—had other ideas.

Tybalt's POV + Whining
Reviewed: 11-13-23
This could have been so much better without Tybalt's whining. It would have been nice to go a few paragraphs without him whining and pouting about not being able to save October, rescue October, find October, just being able to be in the same room as October. I definitely get it that he wants to protect Toby and keep her safe, especially after his own related personal trauma but damn, dude. Eat a Snickers, you're whiny.
Other than that the story was very good. I liked seeing how everything came together to make one cohesive unit in the end which made Toby's version much more detail. I see why the stories were split instead of mashed together into one book. The timeline discrepancies would have been too hard to deal with
There were a couple of production snafus where the narrator went back and redid a line but other than that, he nailed Tybalt's voice and vocal affectations given us by Mary Robinette Kowall.
