Would I have paid a credit for this? Probably not. Was it an enjoyable listen between bigger books? Certainly. Not a bad use of an afternoon doing chores.

Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

To start off, I really wanted to like this. I like RP1 and 2. I kept waiting and waiting for the climax. It’s almost here. Almost here. Just an hour left, how’s he going to wrap this up. And then… nothing. End credits. So much build with so little reward. Not a bad story but wanted more.

Pulitzer Prize, Biography, 2016. Barbarian Days is William Finnegan's memoir of an obsession, a complex enchantment. Surfing only looks like a sport. To initiates it is something else entirely: a beautiful addiction, a demanding course of study, a morally dangerous pastime, a way of life.

My dad recommended this book. He’s similar in age, lifestyle, and even geographically similar to the author. Shoot they grew up surfing the same waves. I was skeptical when he told me to read this; he sold it as a travel book and you like to travel. Alright old man, I’ll give it a try... I don’t surf. I don’t live near a coast (my dad lives in Hawaii.. bastard) but nonetheless I started it. Wow what a ride. This guy lived a hell of a life. I hope I can be as active as he is with my hobbies when I reach 60+.

Not as good as dan Carlin
Reviewed: 01-07-20
On a trip to Hungary I was reminded that the Golden Horde had ridden through and decimated Hungary. I learned this by listening to wrath of the khans from Dan Carlin and playing age of empires 2. I hoped this book would be as good as my previous introductions to the Mongolians, however, I was a little let down. While interesting and informative it doesn’t have the spark that Carlin has or the urgency I felt in the age of empires campaign. Start with Carlin and if you’re still hungry for more try this out.

Story
In 1935 a young Englishman named Laurie Lee arrived in Spain. He had never been overseas. His idea was to walk through the country, earning money for food by playing his violin in bars and plazas. Nearly a century later, the book Laurie Lee wrote - As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning - inspired Alastair Humphreys. It made him fall in love with Spain - the landscapes and the spirit - and with Laurie's style of travel. Alastair dreamed of retracing Laurie Lee’s footsteps but could never get past the hurdle of being distinctly unmusical. This year, he decided to go anyway.

Another adventure with Al
Reviewed: 07-07-19
I’m so glad Al’s books have finally started to come to audible. I have enjoyed reading every single one (including his kids books to my classroom). His story about balancing work, life, adventure, and family really hit home with me. I sympathize with his selfishness of adventure and freedom yet wanting to be a family man. Thank you for writing this book Al!

Story
In his first novel to follow the publication of his enormous success, The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck's vision comes wonderfully to life in this imaginative and unsentimental chronicle of a bus traveling California's back roads, transporting the lost and the lonely, the good and the greedy, the stupid and the scheming, the beautiful and the vicious away from their shattered dreams and, possibly, toward the promise of the future. This edition features an introduction by Gary Scharnhorst.

Great narration. Great prose. Just not much of a plot but I knew that going in. Not my favorite of Steinbeck but still amazing writing. Shows the toil of people caught in translation.

Story
In 1948, a young Australian mining engineer named Ben Carlin set out to do the impossible: circumnavigate the globe, by land and sea, in a single vehicle. The vehicle in question was an amphibious jeep developed by the U.S. Army, which Carlin christened Half-Safe, after a deodorant slogan. It was a mechanical mongrel that was supposed to move with equal ease across land and water but in practice wasn't much good for either one. Undaunted, Carlin and his wife Elinore set off across the Atlantic Ocean with dreams of fame and fortune, and of carving a small notch in history.
