The storyteller did a fantastic job of giving the reader the feeling of being present and a part of the story. There is so much depth to the personalities and one must remember the historical context and the culture of people at that time. Women were raised to sacrifice their own lives for the males who controlled the family. I won't forget Edith as she reminds me of my great-great-grandmothers who crossed oceans and traveled through dangerous countries to honor their marriages and spouses. Some of them died in childbirth and suffered from poor health because of what they had to endure at the hands of the people who pledged to protect them. This tale caused me to experience cognitive dissonance as I both liked and disliked Edith. She reminds me of Melanie from Gone with the Wind who also had a noble character. Read it you won't be able to forget it.

As always Ms Hanna creates characters that feel real and human. Life is full of contrasts and choices and that is evident in all of Ms Hanna's writings. This is a sweet book with an important lesson about not being co-dependent with the people in your life. Value others but likewise value you.

Where there is life there is hope. The author weaves a beautiful tale of how love overcomes even the most desperate of circumstances. The ending is an unexpected surprise that caused tears of joy as I had bonded with the characters.

I love how the story weaves back and forth through the centuries. The characters are developed throughout the course of history showing that the values and culture are the commonality.
