Bait and switch narrator
Reviewed: 12-07-24
The introduction narrator is good. But once the book begins, it changes to a different narrator (the author) who is horrible. Don’t buy this until they re-record it with a decent narrator.

First half is very strong. Second half drags on forever. I’m writing a sentence because audible has a minimum word count for reviews.

Story
In 2010, the words “earthquake swarm” entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia—including his iconic crystal-encrusted white glove—was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon.

Being from Oklahoma I especially liked the history I gained about Oklahoma. I also appreciated the history of the oil and gas industry. This is a must read for all Americans especially if you live or if you claim Oklahoma as your origin state.
I really enjoyed listening to Rachel Maddow in the Audible version. You go girl. Keep up your great work.

Corny dialogue, gave up 2/3 way through
Reviewed: 11-03-19
Some of the dialogue and internal monologue was, well, corny, and it pulled me out of the story. I stopped listening about 2/3 of the way through. The male protagonist, in particular, was not believable to me as a person. The audiobook narrator, who speaks in an earnest fashion, only heightened the corniness. Perhaps a more gruff delivery would have better balanced things out. This was the first Dean Koontz book I have read.

Orphans of terrible hardships themselves, they find these days to be vivid and alive, despite the horrors they see and are complicit in. Moving from the plains of Wyoming to Tennessee, Sebastian Barry's latest work is a masterpiece of atmosphere and language.

4.5 stars rounded up. Unexpected and surprising story. Beautiful writing with wonderful flourishes. The narrator was stellar.
As with all novels, this book is best read when you know nothing about its plot, so that every element is a surprise. That's how I read it, and I was delighted. Avoid reading reviews with spoilers and take a chance on this one!

Reviewed: 08-03-19
This book is written for people who know nothing about this topic and do not think that sleep is important at all. For those people, this might be worth reading. But for everyone else who struggles with specific sleep problems and wants more sleep, the book offers nothing useful or enlightening.
Narrator: She had a strong accent, but I didn't mind the narrator. The speed was perfect for me.

Story
Misogyny is a hot topic, yet it's often misunderstood. What is misogyny, exactly? Who deserves to be called a misogynist? How does misogyny contrast with sexism, and why is it prone to persist - or increase - even when sexist gender roles are waning? This book is an exploration of misogyny in public life and politics by the moral philosopher Kate Manne. It argues that misogyny should not be understood primarily in terms of the hatred or hostility some men feel toward all or most women. Rather, it's primarily about controlling, policing, punishing, and exiling the "bad" women.

Narrator reads way too fast
Reviewed: 02-27-19
Unfortunately I had to give up and return this audiobook. The narrator reads way too quickly for me to process the content. And the audible app only offers speed variants in 25% increments, which is too big a jump. Listening at 75% speed is ok, but a little too slow, and the voice sounds robotic and distracting when slowed down. Audible needs to offer 10 or 15% increments. And nonfiction books shouldn't be speed-read by narrators.
