Story
It’s fair to say that Maddie’s life in London is far from rewarding. With a mother who spends most of her time in Ghana (yet still somehow manages to be overbearing), Maddie is the primary caretaker for her father, who suffers from advanced stage Parkinson’s. At work, her boss is a nightmare and Maddie is tired of always being the only Black person in every meeting.

I enjoyed listening to this book especially after chapter 18. The writing style felt like diary entries I always knew what Maddie was feeling and somehow was able to feel those with her as well. I liked that it felt very real and relatable.

So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Throughout her childhood, Safiya Sinclair’s father, a volatile reggae musician and a militant adherent to a strict sect of Rastafari, was obsessed with the ever-present threat of the corrupting evils of the Western world outside their home, and worried that womanhood would make Safiya and her sisters morally weak and impure. For him, a woman’s highest virtue was her obedience.

Male narrator ruined the book for me
Reviewed: 05-23-25
From the very beginning the slow breathy narration from the male author was so unsettling. I am actually surprised I was able to get to end. Normally, I would like a tortured romance but this was not it. Karis marrying Cam, both Karis and Walsh pining after each other was so annoying. Overall did not like.

Faith, love and family
Reviewed: 06-18-24
This is the 2nd book in the series but it could be read as a standalone as there was no overlap to the previous storyline barring the mention of Chip and Ali. From Ali was introduced, I thought she would end up with Chip and thats what the next series would probably focus on but this was so much better.
The themes of friendship and sisterhood was a linking theme and I really liked that there was more incorporation of God and faith in this series. I liked the complexities of the family issues and how the author emphasized the importance of communication, prayer and trusting God. There was a bit of a dip in the storyline but the full read was all worth it in the end. This story is tied with Before I called you mine as my faves from the author.
