About this listen

From best-selling and eight-time Christy Award-winning author Lynn Austin comes a remarkable novel of sisterhood and self-discovery set against the backdrop of WWII.

1950. In the wake of the war, Audrey Clarkson leaves her manor house in England for a fresh start in America with her young son. As a widowed war bride, Audrey needs the support of her American in-laws, whom she has never met. But she arrives to find that her longtime friend Eve Dawson has been impersonating her for the past four years. Unraveling this deception will force Audrey and Eve’s secrets - and the complicated history of their friendship - to the surface.

1940. Eve and Audrey have been as different as two friends can be since the day they met at Wellingford Hall, where Eve’s mother served as a lady’s maid for Audrey’s mother. As young women, those differences become a polarizing force...until a greater threat - Nazi invasion - reunites them. With London facing relentless bombardment, Audrey and Eve join the fight as ambulance drivers, battling constant danger together. An American stationed in England brings dreams of a brighter future for Audrey, and the collapse of the class system gives Eve hope for a future with Audrey’s brother. But in the wake of devastating loss, both women must make life-altering decisions that will set in motion a web of lies and push them both to the breaking point long after the last bomb has fallen.

This sweeping story transports listeners to one of the most challenging eras of history to explore the deep, abiding power of faith and friendship to overcome more than we ever thought possible.

Loved! Every! Minute!!!

OMG! I loved, loved, LOVED this book!! I loved the book AND the narrator! I listen to books when I go to sleep (and then find the last thing I remember the next day…lol) and I looked forward to this every night. And as I neared the end, I got more and more sad. I’m going to see what other books Lynn Austin has written and what other books Sarah Zimmerman has narrated!

If I Were You

I forgot how much I enjoyed Lynn Austin books! I stumble upon this one after not having listened to one by this author for several years. She has never disappointed. I need to search and find some more of her titles. Enjoy!

So refreshing!!

I’ve listened to so many WWII novels and all the focus was on those that suffered at the hands of the Germans(and Japanese)But this book focused on the men and women who fought and the civilians at home supporting their efforts. There was so much sacrifice to protect our freedom. I’m not sure young people today would be willing to fight and the people at home sacrificing conveniences and even necessities to support a war effort. I really can’t imagine what the British endured when their country was bombed so much.
The loss of life was staggering but they kept fighting. Thank God for all of the men and women
That joined the forces to stop Hitler so all of our countries could live in freedom . This author brings the characters to life and very tactfully shows how God works in our lives every day. Thank you Ms Austin for the beautiful message of forgiveness .

Started slow but gets going!

Character and story development was a bit slow but great historical basis and performance helped make this a good listen. Worth the money.

Wonderful story

I really enjoyed listening to this book . The story was great and well written. I am from London , and my family lived through the war . It gave a good description as my Mum used to talk about how bleak things were , but went with it . I could tell by certain things or words that it was written by an American. None the less a wonderful listen .

Engrossing story

I couldn't stop listening! I was confused at first in the first chapter or two & wasn't sure if I'd like the story. But very quickly it pulled me in. I learned about the war from England's point of view ...fascinating & revealing to be sure.
An amazing lasting friendship story ...through many trials & mistakes.

Excellent!

This was the first time I have ever listened to a book written by Lynn Austin and it was excellent. I enjoyed the era, historical facts and twist and turns I did not expect. Sarah Zimmerman did such a fantastic job narrating that I’m glad I listened to instead of reading this book. Overall an excellent choice!
