Story
Jack Atlas, self-proclaimed 'World's Best Assassin', had a simple plan: retire in style and marry the girl of his dreams. Then he gets placed in The Tower—a divine deathtrap where gods pit their creations against each other for the ultimate prize: eternal paradise for you and your friends. The catch? If you lose, well, let's just say your chances of finding a decent bar in oblivion are slim.

Don’t listen to the haters
Reviewed: 03-24-25
I am 4 chapter in and have been chuckling the whole time I listened. The writing is legitimately funny, and I don’t laugh easily. Some would call me stoic, but I just don’t find a lot of stuff funny. But this story has been funny so far. 4 chapters in and already worth the credit.

Story
Life on the Waves isn't easy. Especially if you're a pickpocket with no education, no prospects, and no future. For Chase and his crew of low-lives, there is one real option. If they want a path out of poverty, they will have to unlock access to the magical card system that will change their lives for the better. Of course, nothing's free in life. And nobody higher up the chain is going to give them a hand up. But what they might lack in education, riches, and, let's face it, hygiene, they have in determination.

I have 14 hours left to go and am struggling to keep listening. The story is decent, but I feel like I was lied to about what the series is about at this point.

With a knife in his gut, Rowan figured he was destined to become just another corpse littering the slums of Taureen. So he was fairly surprised to wake up in the back of a moving wagon with a couple of adventurers. Turns out that Rowan had been given something most street rats can only dream of—a second chance.

NOT LitRPG
Reviewed: 02-04-25
The book is well written, but I can not stand being lied to. There is absolutely no RPG mechanics at all. It’s just a fantasy novel, which is fine. But don’t advertise your series as something that it’s not.

The MC’s only redeeming quality was that he approached everything logically, but toward the end he starts making idiotic decisions and I just couldn’t stick it out. This series is officially a dead end for me.

Story
Nathaniel's bus ride was supposed to be just another boring commute. Wrong. Now, he, 23 fellow passengers, and a corgi named Biscuit, are stuck in a "Hell Difficulty" Tutorial, battling monsters and leveling up to survive. Easy difficulty, anyone can handle. Normal difficulty, you've got to put up a fight to get by. Hard difficulty is where only the tough ones last. And Hell? That's where you have to be a bit out of your mind! With his terrifying talent for mana manipulation, Nathaniel decides to invest every stat point into mana.

Honest review
Reviewed: 02-01-25
The story is solid, it’s fun and different, but I understand why some might not like the MC. He’s 100% a sociopath, someone who is self interested and self obsessed. But that’s what I personally enjoy about the story, he is honest with who he is and what he wants. After all not every MC need to be a goody goody with a heart of gold. This MC suffers from a condition where he lacks proper emotional depth. Which, as someone with Asperger’s, I empathize with. Hell this MC would probably be me in a similar situation. I’d let the world burn to protect myself and my wife. So don’t dismiss the story just because other people only want a knight in shining armor MC. Because let’s face it, those stories are a dime a dozen.
Now, the real issue for me, is that the book feels like it was written by a high schooler… maybe even a middle schooler. It’s hard to explain why this is without going on a long diatribe about sentence structure and literary flow. But for example you might hear things like “I walked into the house, then walked to kitchen, then walked to the fridge.” Whereas a proper author wouldn’t say walked three times and instead write “I entered the house and proceeded the kitchen to check the fridge.” Bottom line, this book needed a proper editor. It is obvious this is the authors first book and they probably couldn’t afford one. So cut them some slack, because they do tell a good story despite the faults.

Warning about MC
Reviewed: 01-10-25
I’ve read the first 3 books in the series and have now dropped it. I have struggled to look past the MC’s overly goofy goody nature, but near the end of book 3 I just couldn’t do it any more. The MC giving up a gift from a god to make his friend slightly stronger, rather than accepting his role as the power of his group just broke the enjoyment for me. What’s the point of an OP MC if he refuses to become Truly OP.

I can’t read books with female MC’s…
Reviewed: 12-26-24
It’s not a sexist thing, it’s more that I struggle to connect with most female MC’s and have only ever enjoyed one other series with a female MC. Ironically, it was from the same narrator. I avoided this series despite rave reviews for years now, but finally decided to give it a try… I can say with absolute certainty that this series is worth the read. Not once did I ever get board or feel like I had to wade through filler. The pacing of this book is a master class in how a story should be told. The narrator is incredible and serves to elevate the book beyond what is possible with just the written word. The MC is intelligent and fun, and you want to see her succeed starting from the very first chapter. Don’t miss out on this series, it is worth every penny. Now, I could keep praising it, but I’m in a hurry to move on to book 2.
