Following the devastating attack on Yaresh, its people are left to pick up the pieces. The city lies in ruins, but its decimated defenders have more to deal with than just reconstruction. Jason's actions during the battle have brought unwelcome attention from allies and enemies alike. While the adventurers question his loyalty, the messengers question his very nature. Both have designs on Jason that he intends to thwart, but a danger comes to light that shifts everyone's agenda.

HWFWM 10 is like reading Defiance of the fall 1. 75% setup with a fun grand finale. while not a story to go back to often, the real impact of the time taken to explain detaiils in this book will be measured in future books.
Made me laugh, showed the path forward (too well), makes boons 4, 5, 6 more meaningful.
Hopefully this is the last expo dump.

unnecessary half.

This was a struggle to get into and by the end felt underwhelming. the first half of the book is so different, and the shift in characters is so swift into what feels like a whole different book.

Story
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

too many bones, not enough meat
Reviewed: 01-15-23
This is only the 2nd lit rpg I have tried so take this with that in mind.
This was so focused on the background of all the numerous systems and gimmicks (bones) while offering barely any narrative story (meat). It was like some people sat and compiled every d and d campaign absurd moment and put a string through them calling it a story.
If you think a string of random encounters filled with quips and absurd characters qualifies as a well told story, this book is for you. Maybe that's all lit rpgs are which will turn me away from the genre shortly.
The sad part is I like the 2 main characters and many of the side characters. Their dynamic is fun and it would be great to see them in something ither than the cheapest ripoff of a battle royale.

Story
The apocalypse will be televised! You know what’s worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat. And you know what’s worse than that? An alien invasion, the destruction of all man-made structures on Earth, and the systematic exploitation of all the survivors for a sadistic intergalactic game show. That’s what. Join Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world—or just get to the next level—in a video game–like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon.

Story
Ulfenkarn is a city of nightmares. Its vampiric rulers have indulged their bloodlust in every shadow-clad alley, turning the once-proud metropolis into a charnel house. Already crushed beneath the tyranny of Radukar the Wolf and his Thirsting Court, a spate of vicious murders plunges the mortal inhabitants into fresh terror. Emerging to uncover a connection between the attacks is an unlikely group of heroes: a vampire hunter from Carstinia; a slum-born vigilante; a ruthless wizard; and a soldier who is the last survivor of her noble bloodline.

Great Worldbuilding
Reviewed: 08-02-22
One of the greatest aspects of the Warhammer Universe is while the world and lore is vast, it's content is often delivered in small bite size chunks with it's own unique and impactful flavor.
This was a great sampling of the governing actions and impact of the undead and a few exceptional champions. Worth a read (listen) if you enjoy Warhammer lore, and a fun mystery.
4 stars because it felt a bit repetitive at periods throughout.
