Story
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Story
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

while the actual writing is excellent there should be some obvious apriori indicator of violent sexual behaviours. What was there fit the story was ell but I wish I'd known to skip this one.

the early works in this series we're far far better. I skipped MANY chapters of non-plot drivel. skip this book in the series. it could have been more enjoyable as a 30 page epilogue to the prior tome.

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

such a drop off in writing quality
Reviewed: 12-04-23
I like the storyline well enough yet the last few books are written in a more basic style. Everything from fight scenes that used to focus on style and galantry became centered on blood and gore to simple grammar faux pas -- split infinitives, forgetting an 'ly' adverbs. Silly descriptions like a man badly wounded soaking the ground with blood followed immediately with stating the man rises from his minor injury with a mere trickle of blood on his side. Also I was exhausted by repitious 'just right' or 'just wrong'' sequences. To use it once may be inventive while over use is tormenting us the reader. Spending time to determine how one could express a scene without refusing such of a mire would be a beneficial. endeavour for the writer
Seriously Jordan is an overly verbose author with long winded scene enrichment. Sanderson seems to be long winded writer in a manner that encouraged me to skip much.

from my notes:
narration: ok. i could not always figure who was speaking in dialogue. otherwise --- all ok.
story: light easy read.
problems: a couple here and there. e.g., a spaceship that blows up while under acceleration of 2g does not continue at 2g ... since it no longer has thrust. its debris field continues at the final 'velocity' but not 2g as that is acceleration. perhaps this item will be handled in next book.... if the selfish 1-star at focault didn't go to sol to report mutiny, how did they find out before the jtf returned to earth. nonetheless, this is still a worthsile listen.

Abandoned to dereliction and isolated by a moat of thorny wilderness, it used to be a playground for his children. Until strange music and the terrifying spectre of a leering soldier frightened them away. Julian Creed is TV’s most popular ghost hunter. Only his small production team knows he is a complete fake who doesn’t even believe in the paranormal. Until he spends one night in the waiting room.

Exceptionally expressive and evocotative writing
Reviewed: 10-16-23
This is my second book by this author that I can remember reading. There are so many self published authors that simply either crank out vast quantities of blood and gore series or spill ink on thousands of pages in order to fool their unaccomplished selves into believing that they have written an epic paperweight that will singly handidly rivot a landfill to the ground.
Mr. Cottham is simply a far superior writer. Even though I was a bit disappointed in the ending of this novel the writing style is wonderfully entertaining. His vocabulary is well explored and decidedly entertainly applied. He adeptly opens a door through which he invites us to participate in the richly evolved world of his imagination.
A master Bard indeed who worthy of including in a list of the greats.

too much soft porn for me
Reviewed: 10-13-23
The story is fine, The soft porn is a major detractor. The main character is still determined to embrace ignorance and that makes her unlikeable.
The 10-12 year old voice used for the protagonist annoys me but it fits the maturity level of the supposed 20 yearish protag.
For the author, re-read Alan Dean Foster's Flynx [in flux] or Bujold's young adult work and study how the author expands his audience base using simple literary devices and plot. Specifically read it looking at which extemporaneous elements advance the plot and at those that convolute the plot then do the same for your series. I do not want you to believe that I do not like your story telling, I do. Nonetheless, there is enough to keep me from continuing. I will try any new work and sincerely hope for a main character that I can like and root for.

Reviewed: 10-04-23
I liked the story though the protagonist with both how intellectually mundane and how comfortablly bellicose in her ignorance made her difficult to like. That said I do believe that if the author follows any reasonable route in the character's development this could be a fun light jaunt to follow. I'll read books two and three at least. i conjecture that the young teen audience will like it -- I skipped all the gratuitous sex and cursing where reasonable resulting in a genuinely more pleasant experience.
