A decent story with good narration

I tuned out a lot of this, just wasn't invested in the characters. The ending was pretty good and there are enough unanswered questions to make the next book appealing, but I'd have to be a lot more engaged by then to pick up the third.

Mediocre story, odd narration choices
Reviewed: 07-24-23
I think the story was a good idea but the writing was a little weak. The main character wasn't believable and the side characters seemed like they were just archetypes that facilitated the plot without much developement. The author told a decent story and people seem to like it, so what do I know.
Ray Porter obviously made an accent decision in his preparation and the producer/publisher obviously supported it, but it puzzles me like it has other reviewers. Once again, he's a successful performer in his element, so it's hard to criticize something just because I don't understand or enjoy it. I might listen to the next book in the series, but it would definitely have to hold my interest pretty keenly to get me to book three.

Authors write, narrators read
Reviewed: 06-15-22
Sometimes when the author does the narration, you really capture the nuances of the characters they had in mind that may not translate to the written word. Sometimes, however, the author should just let someone with a little more life to their voice read the audio book. This is the latter.

There were so many times where I thought, "I get it, let's move on," when the scene would just linger. Some plot points just seemed like a mouthpiece for the author's opinions.

I really liked the production value, and the story itself was original, but the writing was basic, heavy-handed, and obvious. Some key points could have been covered up better and some loopholes were ridiculously exposed, but if you like being spoon-fed, this one's free.

I can't believe the negative reviews that claim the ending is boring or random. So much work and planning went into wrapping up all the mysteries and questions, I think it's the most satisfying ending to a beloved story that anyone could hope for. I read this when I was young and I cried for the last two chapters, and listening to the audio book near the age of 40, I still feel that this is a work of delicate perfection.

The sand-blasted world of Arrakis has become green, watered, and fertile. Old Paul Atreides, who led the desert Fremen to political and religious domination of the galaxy, is gone. But for the children of Dune, the very blossoming of their land contains the seeds of its own destruction. The altered climate is destroying the giant sandworms, and this in turn is disastrous for the planet's economy.
