Story
A secret government unit is formed under the oversight of Adam Harrison, famed paranormal investigator. The case: In a historic mansion in New Orleans’ French Quarter, a senator’s wife falls to her death from a balcony. Most think she jumped, distraught over the loss of her young son. Some say she was pushed. And yet others believe she was beckoned by the ghostly spirits that inhabit the house - once the site of a serial killer’s grisly work.

Clichés & Two Accents
Reviewed: 03-08-25
Probably could have put up with the narration if the story was good, but I found myself getting angry at the gender roles and cliché interactions. It's 2025. I think we're past this kind of dialogue. For next time if the book takes place in the south and you need southern accents, get someone who can do southern accents.

Jake Hayes is missing. This much is certain. At first, his wife, Nina, thinks he is blowing off steam at a friend’s house after their heated fight the night before. But then a day goes by. Two days. Five. And Jake is still nowhere to be found. Lily Scott, Nina’s friend and coworker, thinks she may have been the last to see Jake before he went missing. After Lily confesses everything to her husband, Christian, the two decide that nobody can find out what happened leading up to Jake’s disappearance, especially not Nina.

The minutia of what some people were thinking became annoying. The monologue at times made me want to slap some of the characters. I probably wouldn't have finished it unless I was reading it in tandem with somebody else who wanted to discuss it. The author is talented though and the narrator was very good.

STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why?

The narrator did a good job. I guess I didn't like the ridiculousness of it all. Maybe I could've gotten on board with it if it was better executed. The permis was good.

Story
Ida Pederson was an executive at ‘Nyberg Shoreline’ when she was sent to the small Northern Irish village of Port Kriel to diffuse tensions between the company and the local community. When an unexploded bomb was identified on the seabed near Nyberg’s windfarm, Ida sent a local crew of eight men to investigate. That night, only two men returned home, barely alive and unable to speak of what had happened out at sea.

Trigger warning! Pass if you don't like true crime
Reviewed: 12-13-23
It was well written, and well spoken, but I should've read the description better perhaps. If you don't like true crime and you don't like feeling gutted, this isn't the book for you. As for the story otherwise, I didn't buy how nice the main character was to this woman, because in real life, I don't think anybody would've taken it to that extreme amount of hospitality and tiptoeing around to accommodate. But perhaps I've never been gaslighted by a psychopath.

I can't make it through this book. The female lead is cliche and weak. The quantum leap from happy wife to in 10 seconds, figuring out how to leave her husband was lame.

Horrible Narration

The lack of any emotion in the narrator, or any change of pace, made me give up on this book. It might have had a good story, but I'll never know because it's like she's reading the phonebook.

The world’s greatest bodybuilder. The world’s highest-paid movie star. The leader of the world’s sixth-largest economy. That these are the same person sounds like the setup to a joke, but this is no joke. This is Arnold Schwarzenegger. And this did not happen by accident. Arnold’s stratospheric success happened as part of a process. As the result of clear vision, big thinking, hard work, direct communication, resilient problem-solving, open-minded curiosity, and a commitment to giving back. All of it guided by the one lesson Arnold’s father hammered into him above all: be useful.

Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job.

I’m torn, I think there were some editing errors. I believe there is a key being given before it was decided to be given later. Also, a neurodivergent lead was interesting, but some things just fell short to me.
