About this listen

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

“Grabs you on the first page and doesn’t let go until you reach the end.”—Laura Dave, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Thing He Told Me

A husband’s disappearance links two couples in this twisty thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Local Woman Missing, Mary Kubica

Jake Hayes is missing. This much is certain. At first, his wife, Nina, thinks he is blowing off steam at a friend’s house after their heated fight the night before. But then a day goes by. Two days. Five. And Jake is still nowhere to be found.

Lily Scott, Nina’s friend and coworker, thinks she may have been the last to see Jake before he went missing. After Lily confesses everything to her husband, Christian, the two decide that nobody can find out what happened leading up to Jake’s disappearance, especially not Nina. But Nina is out there looking for her husband, and she won’t stop until the truth is discovered.

"Rich with detail and a mounting, almost suffocating sense of dread, Just the Nicest Couple is a dark and twisted exploration of loyalty, family, and how far we’ll go to protect the ones we love."—Andrea Bartz, New York Times bestselling author of We Were Never Here

Editorial Review

No body of evidence
First things first: Kudos to narrators Brittany Pressley and Gary Tiedemann. Between the two, they seamlessly perform each of the many voices that fill this story, including the two couples, relatives, colleagues, and a detective. It always makes me ask that famous question, “How did they do that?” Answer: They are simply great performers. And as for the story, for a tale that begins with a simple walk in the park, things sure turn twisty quickly, and it has nothing to do with the path chosen. As the mystery unfolds, Mary Kubica takes us on a tour of two towns and peeks into the lives of two couples who could both use some excitement (such as news of a pregnancy, perhaps?). But being a thriller, well, um, it’s not as nice as that, especially when somebody’s body is missing. —Yvonne D., Audible Editor

Good story, but lacks development

Entertaining, suspenseful and original, but I found myself expecting flashbacks or something to build up to the tragic circumstances. Because everything takes place in a few days with just a few characters, I found myself getting a little bored and restless.

Presley does a fantastic job (I think she’s gotten better and better) however, I’m not sure Tiedemann is right for the male character, or maybe his voice is right for the role, but just not for me…. Too whispery and weak.

All in all, it’s worth a listen and a good story- just could have been better.

I read the whole thing but had so many questions at the end!!

No spoilers here! I’m a fan of twisty thrillers and mysteries but this one had me scratching my head at the end. Don’t get my wrong, I listed to the whole thing and couldn’t wait for the pieces to fall into place. Everything seemed to happen at the end of the book, making it a major slow burn. I’m still a little confused about some of the plot lines that never came together.
I loveeee the writer and did enjoy the voice performance but I wanted it to be a little more fast paced. I recommend it for those who love the writer, start with a different book if you are a newbie to Mary Kubica.

Kept me guessing throughout the story,

This was the best book I’ve read in a long time maybe ever! The narrators were excellent and the ending was great. Loved it.

Compelling story and excellent narration

I really felt like I got to know each character and that I was truly present as they led me through their homes , relationships and lives. This is the kind of light, easy to read/listen modern, suburban, mystery that I always thoroughly enjoy! These expert narrators are always wonderful, and did not disappoint with this book! They were excellent. The story was, at times, somewhat predictable, but there were more than enough twists and turns to keep me on my toes and holding my breath repeatedly as well! Very enjoyable listen!!

Had Potential

I kept waiting for this to be a Mary Kubica masterpiece. But it never happened. It was predictable even with plot twists and the repetition in dialogue, which personally is a huge negative, only made the characters seem weaker. Hoping the next one will be great!

Narration was good with what they were given.

Very mid, but not bad

My lord, Lilly and Christian are insufferable and the story was fairly predictable. Still, I enjoyed the ride.
