Story
Mi-ja and Young-sook, two girls living on the Korean island of Jeju, are best friends who come from very different backgrounds. When they are old enough, they begin working in the sea with their village’s all-female diving collective, led by Young-sook’s mother. As the girls take up their positions as baby divers, they know they are beginning a life of excitement and responsibility but also danger. This beautiful, thoughtful novel illuminates a world turned upside down, one where the women are in charge, engaging in dangerous, physical work, and the men take care of the children.

Audiobook review : a story of female friendship, family, history, life, and generational change through the cultural, political and hierarchical world of 2 Korean women. The differences in their younger years, their marriages, etc. and a fateful day brought about in cruel times when choices were limited. Or are they? Great narration.

A gift…

Audiobook review: I always appreciate when an author reads their own memoir. It enhances the telling that much more. I had learned about Ashley through an interview with Glennon Doyle. Ashley’s story is an important one for survivors of traumatized upbringings and the resulting resilience and vocalization people need to start or continue the process of lifting themselves from similar experiences. This book is a gift towards healing and thriving.

Story
For much of the 20th and 21st centuries, women’s sexuality was an uncharted territory in science, studied far less frequently - and far less seriously - than its male counterpart. That is, until Emily Nagoski’s Come As You Are, which used groundbreaking science and research to prove that the most important factor in creating and sustaining a sex life filled with confidence and joy is not what the parts are or how they’re organized but how you feel about them.

Decided to read this book after hearing Emily speak on Glennon Doyle’s podcast, We Can Do Hard Things. This will be read by many people for many reasons and who will receive it in many ways. I feel it’s a good beginning for getting comfortable with the many aspects of all subjects covered. Especially for those who aren’t at ease addressing their own thoughts, questions, and concerns.

Story
Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a breakup, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times.

A different kind of story… so soothing.
Reviewed: 02-12-22
(Audible review) I found myself floating between wondering what this book’s true goal was and understanding exactly why it was created. In the end, I realized the reader will get what speaks to them from it. For me it was a unique approach to addressing “wintering”, using the parts that make up the season of winter as a compass for how to survive and thrive beyond the human-type of wintering, basically hardships and/or depression etc. It’s a meandering of stories that soothe and comfort and may be too gentle for some readers. But introspective me totally appreciated it. The final chapter sums up well exactly what I’ve learned over the years when faced with getting through episodes of my own wintering: learning to hang in there and allow the season pass. Before I close I must say that there was a second beauty gained from this book; namely the incredibly comforting voice of the narrator. Simply a fantastic choice for this book as many times she eased me into a calm that helped me drift off to sleep.

Bruce Lee is a cultural icon, renowned the world over for his martial arts and film legacy. But Lee was also a deeply philosophical thinker, learning at an early age that martial arts are more than just an exercise in physical discipline - they are an apt metaphor for living a fully realized life. Now, in Be Water, My Friend, Lee’s daughter, Shannon, shares the concepts at the core of his philosophies, showing how they can serve as tools of personal growth and self-actualization.

Engrossing magic…

(Audible review) Though much of this brutiful story is surrounded in wrenching generational hardship and dysfunction, the weaving of the Hawaiian culture into the core of this story and its characters lends authenticity to the magical and mystical nature of culturally taught beliefs as a driver for choices. The Hawaiian lore is important to this family’s history, frustrations and bond that gets tested over and over again in their attempt to rescue themselves from poverty etc. Through this mystical and deep rooted belief system they are constantly seeking a savior and yet in many ways it is also the root of much of their inability to escape their struggles and hardships. In the end the enlightenments each gains demonstrates the brutal beauty of life that is never gained without struggle. Note: For those whose review included discouraging listening to this book, I couldn’t disagree more; a standing ovation to the narrators. I attempted reading it first and the Audible version is far more superior as it took me to the island and held me there in rapture. A brutiful story.

(Audible review) I can tell you that I tried, I really really tried. I got myself 11 chapters in after having multiple occasions before that point where I considered stopping. But the tediously overly descriptive and metaphorically drenched prose eventually caught up to me causing the story to become lost in its own distractions. I was literally driven to boredom. I used to dislike not finishing a book, but I’ve learned I can choose to move on to books that capture my attention.

She is a gritty truth teller whose openness is appreciated and needed. She’s thoroughly skilled at addressing the elephant in the room whether you see it or not, whether you’re comfortable or not, and regardless of the topic. Keeping it real as always!

Story
Like nearly one in five people, Matt Haig suffers from depression. Reasons to Stay Alive is his inspiring account of how, minute by minute and day by day, he overcame the disease with the help of reading, writing, and the love of his parents and his girlfriend (now wife), Andrea. And eventually, he learned to appreciate life all the more for it. Everyone's lives are touched by mental illness; if we do not suffer from it ourselves, then we have a friend or loved one who does.

Audible review ::: this is a big subject and should be approached from a prepared position. Those with anxiety and depression could become triggered. I appreciate the author’s sharing of his experience in terms so easily relatable to everyday folks unlike like many other books with the clinical approach. In the end I value Haig’s efforts and believe it has potential to help folks with anxiety and depression or help others understand people with it.
