Things are not going well for Elizabeth Cage. It all started with the Christmas she can't quite remember. There's blood on her doorstep every morning. Something unpleasant is heading her way. And then there's the sinister note threatening her life. The one that seems to have been written by Elizabeth herself . . .

Excellent once again. Sometimes I think there was a little too much action - different people and events spilling into each other. Wonderful narrator.

But when Deedra's notoriously promiscuous lifestyle provides an extensive list of suspects but very few clues, Lily has no choice but to resume the role of amateur detective and join the investigation.

I may not be a wizard from Chicago, an iron druid on the run, a hot-tempered maker who hates Girl Scouts, or part of a destructive duo from New York City, but I guarantee you'll be entertained.

I SO wanted to like this book. The bones of a great series are there, but too many shortcuts with the story make it only a cheap copy of the James Butcher classic. The narrator is flat - and that must be by choice because he never picks up the tone, bringing you in to the story. It's just there. I liked the various side characters and the political/relationship problems that arise. But no relationship goes anywhere deeper than the surface. emotions are just words that jump in there - you don't just accept someone as family at a moment's notice. And skip the sex scenes. They are poorly written and seem like a cheap element to spice up the story. I will skip the next one.

Story
Ruby Young's new Boston apartment comes with all the usual perks. Windows facing the brick wall of the next-door building. Heat that barely works. A malfunctioning buzzer. Noisy neighbors. A dead body on the sidewalk outside. And of course, a ghost. Since Cordelia Graves died in her apartment a few months ago, she's kept up her residency, despite being bored out of her (non-tangible) skull and frustrated by her new roommate. When her across-the-hall neighbor, Jake Macintyre, is shot and killed in an apparent mugging gone wrong outside their building, Cordelia is convinced there’s more to it.

I finished it, so it is a basic story with a good narrator. It kept me interested during the drive to work, but I won’t go looking for the next book by the author. Not enough description of people or places. Needed more detail to make you root for the lead characters. I wanted to like it.

Story
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

I've listed to many John Scalzi books and like them. This one was too gross. Had neat characters and the idea was fine, but it was gross - like potty language from 11 year olds. I will be very careful of what else I listen to from him.

I loved the first book. Stuck with the second because I wanted to see the story come full circle. This author got SO LOST while writing this! A good editor should hack off all the extraneous stuff and get back to the fun of the first book. Side quests and all the self- realization made this too long and too boring. Save yourself and pick a different book.
