Paris, 1943. The scent of fresh baguettes hangs in the air as Coralie unbolts the door to her bakery with trembling fingers. She must get out of the city. Hiding her precious leather recipe book inside her coat, she promises never to let the secret locations of the people she worked tirelessly to save fall into German hands… Present day. this story was moving and intriguing. it could work well as a movie! My only criticism is that the narrator spoke too slowly, but that was easily fixed by speeding it up to 1.2x speed.

Meet Randi Burnett—she’s brilliant, she’s beautiful, and she works for the bride. Missing groom? Intoxicated in-laws? Crying ring-bearer? You name it, she wrangles it. Too bad her personal life isn’t thriving like her side gig as a bridesmaid for hire. Recently dumped, Randi throws herself into her biggest challenge yet when she’s hired as a maid of honor and pretend best friend for an ice queen bride. There’s just one problem—the best man is infuriating, overprotective, and anti-marriage.

the main character is psychotic
Reviewed: 04-19-25
the story is incredibly unrealistic and shallow. the main character is an unlikeable sociopath who develops unhealthy obsessions with people and feels the need to inject herself in people's lives where it's clearly unwelcome. the author clearly felt the need to throw inclusion in this book like she was checking off boxes rather than building characters, so it felt cheap and even cringe worthy when the idiotic main character was describing how handsome the male character was and used "WHITE" as one of the "attractive traits"... that was pretty disgusting. this author is terrible at building characters and storylines. wtf was the point of making them both bisexual but not including that odd mention anywhere else in the plot? narration is annoying, the female narrator sounds like she has cotton in her mouth and the male has a strange fake accent that sounds like an SNL character. it's just weird.

Story
Luca is used to being ‘the single one’ – which is partly why she dreaded going to the wedding of an old university friend. Surrounded by faces she hasn’t seen in 10 years, Luca can feel herself being sucked back into the immature, decade-old gossip that no one seems to have forgotten. But when Tom walks in, Luca’s heart stops. He was her ‘almost boyfriend’, and she had been completely swept off her feet by him… but he’s currently standing next to the girl he broke her heart with at a party all those years ago.

this is just a reproduction of "time of our lives". why not clearly state that so i don't waste a credit on a book I've already listened to? the story and narration are great, but why redo a book and rename it and act like it's new when it's not? this should've been free for those who already purchased "time of our lives" because now that book isn't available.

An elusive courtesan, Marthe de Florian had cultivated a life of art and beauty, casting out all recollections of her impoverished childhood in the dark alleys of Montmartre. With Europe on the brink of war, she shares her story with her granddaughter, Solange Beaugiron, using her prized possessions to reveal her innermost secrets. Most striking of all are a beautiful string of pearls and a magnificent portrait of Marthe painted by the Italian artist Giovanni Boldini.

i think the author did a great job on the content and sourcing. she should have hired a narrator though, as her annunciation was often muddy and robotic. it sounded like someone reading an article. overall, good ideas and the author should be proud of her work.

Despite their age, they’re still in great form—perfectly put together, sprightly and sparky, and always in search of their next “excitement.” This time it’s a trip to Paris to receive the Légion d’honneur for their part in the liberation of France. And as always, they will be accompanied by their devoted great-nephew, Archie.

incredible all the way around!
Reviewed: 02-07-24
I pre-ordered this book originally because I love Karen Cass' narrating, and have never been disappointed in any of the books she's narrated. it was an extra plus that one of my favorite genres is WWII historical fiction/ nonfiction novels, even more so about women who were an integral part of the war effort. So, when I read the summary, I had high hopes for this one. As soon as it arrived, I dug in and couldn't put it away! what an incredible story with wonderful characters, unexpected plot twists and, of course, top notch narration! I listened to this on a road trip with my 16 year old daughter and we were both thoroughly entertained and certain parts (i won't spoil it!) gave both of us chills! I can only hope that this book is optioned for a movie because it is, hands down, one of the best!
