About this listen

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • READ WITH JENNA’S APRIL BOOK CLUB PICK • The Husbands delights in asking: how do we navigate life, love, and choice in a world of never-ending options? (“A bottomless champagne flute of a novel —The Washington Post)

When Lauren returns home to her flat in London late one night, she is greeted at the door by her husband, Michael. There’s only one problem—she’s not married. She’s never seen this man before in her life. But according to her friends, her much-improved decor, and the photos on her phone, they’ve been together for years.

As Lauren tries to puzzle out how she could be married to someone she can’t remember meeting, Michael goes to the attic to change a lightbulb and abruptly disappears. In his place, a new man emerges, and a new, slightly altered life re-forms around her. Realizing that her attic is creating an infinite supply of husbands, Lauren confronts the question: If swapping lives is as easy as changing a lightbulb, how do you know you’ve taken the right path? When do you stop trying to do better and start actually living?

Editorial Review

Catharsis for life’s curveballs
After a personally tumultuous 2023, I decided to embrace a “new year, new me” mentality for 2024, and though it has now been several months, I am still finding that adjusting to change, even when positive, often feels disorienting. However, wrapping my head around entering a new chapter in my life has been made easier alongside Holly Gramazio’s debut novel. Day in and day out, Lauren grapples with the sudden enchantment of her attic, which swaps out one new husband for another on a seemingly endless loop. And while, yes, some of the men manage to woo her in the little time they spend together, The Husbands is about so much more than finding romance. The rapid changes to Lauren’s life that propel her narrative forward, from sudden adjustments to her class status to changes in her own profession, offer an endless stream of fascinating insights and undeniable humor.—Haley H., Audible Editor

I didn’t want it to end!

This book was absolutely DELIGHTFUL. I devoured it so quickly yet never wanted it to end. It’s interesting, endlessly imaginative, and funny without veering into silly.

The author created an amazing premise and likable main character, and I just wanted to keep living in her weird world for a while to see how each decision impacted the next plot twist.

For such an impossible premise, I felt like the author thought through every detail, and I was delighted again at every surprising yet inevitable turn. I hope she publishes another book soon!

So unique

I am so glad I gave this a try despite some mediocre reviews because I absolutely loved this! The concept was so unique and I didn’t mind that we didn’t get to know the husbands well (there’s a lot of them). Was the main character a little shallow at times? Yes. But I think that’s kind of the point? All that to say, I can see this could be hit or miss, but I’m happy to say this one worked for me. Such a great book club pick!

Break out of your reading rut!

You won't be able to put this down! Many funny moments, but also surprising depth. It's fun to see how her life plays out with each different husband. Midnight Library-esque but better.

Unexpectedly Dark

From the synopsis and cover, I saw possibilities for a cute and funny story. However, the cuteness and humor never arrive, and the protagonist falls into a dark, self-centered pattern of objectifying and manipulating people. Perhaps that is what happens when you find that your current universe is essentially disposable. Still, I would have preferred that the author explored a less sociopathic element of the idea. At best, it is an attempt at dark humor that falls flat. In the end, I could sympathize with the protagonist's need to change her circumstances in some cases, but I was put off by her choices and how events unfolded.

Perhaps your definition of funny differs from mine. This may be your favorite book.

I am glad I got it free from the Plus catalog. Otherwise, I would have returned it to get my credit back.

So good; fantastic performance

I loved this story, and the performance (all the accents! Different intonation for each character!) added so much. Highly recommend.

Wonderful Suprise

This book kept popping up on my suggestions list and I thought, “You must not know me at all!” I thought this was going to be a sappy romance. Boy, was I wrong! Fun, magical realism (I believe). The main character is multidimensional- so, likable and makes mistakes- kinda like a human. Plot was fun. I was not sure how things were going to wrap up- but the author found a way. The book, while fun, is also thought-provoking. The story is great. The narrator does a fantastic job. I am glad I took a chance. Good use of a credit!

There is so much more this book could have been. It was also hard to root for the main character.
