About this listen

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • READ WITH JENNA’S APRIL BOOK CLUB PICK • The Husbands delights in asking: how do we navigate life, love, and choice in a world of never-ending options? (“A bottomless champagne flute of a novel —The Washington Post)

When Lauren returns home to her flat in London late one night, she is greeted at the door by her husband, Michael. There’s only one problem—she’s not married. She’s never seen this man before in her life. But according to her friends, her much-improved decor, and the photos on her phone, they’ve been together for years.

As Lauren tries to puzzle out how she could be married to someone she can’t remember meeting, Michael goes to the attic to change a lightbulb and abruptly disappears. In his place, a new man emerges, and a new, slightly altered life re-forms around her. Realizing that her attic is creating an infinite supply of husbands, Lauren confronts the question: If swapping lives is as easy as changing a lightbulb, how do you know you’ve taken the right path? When do you stop trying to do better and start actually living?

Editorial Review

Catharsis for life’s curveballs
After a personally tumultuous 2023, I decided to embrace a “new year, new me” mentality for 2024, and though it has now been several months, I am still finding that adjusting to change, even when positive, often feels disorienting. However, wrapping my head around entering a new chapter in my life has been made easier alongside Holly Gramazio’s debut novel. Day in and day out, Lauren grapples with the sudden enchantment of her attic, which swaps out one new husband for another on a seemingly endless loop. And while, yes, some of the men manage to woo her in the little time they spend together, The Husbands is about so much more than finding romance. The rapid changes to Lauren’s life that propel her narrative forward, from sudden adjustments to her class status to changes in her own profession, offer an endless stream of fascinating insights and undeniable humor.—Haley H., Audible Editor

Ho hum pretty repetitive story

Well, I finished reading it but I thought about abandoning it many times. Didn’t enjoy very much.

Interesting concept

I really liked the concept of this book it was slow for me to get into and seemed superficial but then it built and built and drew me in. I think it explores interesting dynamics between relationships,, time, and choices.

The beautiful chaos of trying to decide.

The reader was fabulous carrying a quirky and engaging plot skillfully with an understanding of the human nature. She brought out a believable quality to some implausible scenarios that seem just normal thanks to Gramazio’s skillful character development. Laurel striving to understand herself and her needs while accepting and rejecting different aspects of who she could be. Such a gratifying conclusion to a romp through modern Londoner’s daily lives.

Romance with a twist!

Unusual premise. The performer was excellent, handling accents easily. Ending was surprising. Fun read. Highly recommend.

The premise.

I liked the main character, I liked how the author worked out this “world” and made it possible for Lauren to operate in it. I couldn’t tell how it was going to end. I liked the idea somewhat, although in real life, sleeping with all these guys you didn’t know? All the glib lies? Fairly happy with the ending, although still missing Carter. Also loved the accent of the reader.

Surprisingly Good

At first I couldn’t understand how a story about magically appearing husbands could go on for more than 30 minutes. But this book was so engrossing and enjoyable that I ended up finishing it in 2 days. I don’t want to spoil any of what happens, but I loved it.

Clever!

The more I ponder this story, the more I learn from it. There's plenty of humor along with the lessons.

Breath of Fresh Air

I haven't enjoyed a book this much in awhile. It had me laughing crazy, talking back to it, and in general having a fantastic time. You can't go wrong here!
