Story
It’s 1851 in old York. Lizzy Grimm struggles to save her late father’s charmingly creepy yet floundering antique shop, Grimm Curiosities. Then, during a particularly snowy December in this most haunted city in England, things turn…curiouser. Lizzy meets Antony Carlisle, whose sister suffers from the same perplexing affliction as Lizzy’s mother—both stricken silent and unresponsive after speaking with ghosts.

I truly enjoyed this story and I'm so appreciative of the lived experience shared by the author. Her strength and resilience are I'm sure a large part of what makes this story so successful.
I want to also acknowledge the diverse experience of every person subjected to domestic and family violence. The ongoing impact of trauma on children whether directly involved in physical violence must be noted. Because even observing violence is violence.

Too far from reality for me
Reviewed: 06-21-24
As a female and former detective, I get the need to empower women in life and literature. But the main character here is not empowered she's a self righteous, power seeker with no self awareness at all. She trods on everyone, using her excuse of for better good to do so. Narcissistic for sure and frustrating to me. I gave it a good try but had to give up

The main character "Cleopatra" is so frustrating, opinionated, impulsive, judgemental and completely unrepentant because she is a "Strong woman" which is laughable because her behaviour reinforces gender expectations that women are working hard to overcome. Glass and Steel was much better than this. what a shame.

Story
It’s the night shift worker who finds them. Huddled in a hospital store cupboard is elderly Edith Higgins. Knifed to death. Sitting behind her is Staff Nurse Lily Frampton, a scalpel clasped in her blood-soaked hand. No one can understand why this kind-hearted, dedicated nurse would brutally murder a frail patient she’s spent months caring for. That same day, mild-mannered schoolteacher Rod Black is found surrounded by the battered bodies of his pupils. Why would a well-respected teacher beat five schoolboys to death?

Overall I liked this series. The narrator did an amazing Job of managing many complex characters. The storyline was fun and engaging.
what I didn't like were the way the main character, Charlie, who is supposed to be this strong person who has overcome diversity, behaved like a know it all, selfish, demanding and manipulative little brat. She was the annoying sideline for me. It was the other characters that made the stories engaging.

I enjoyed the first book in this series, but not this one. Maybe that is due to the first being about topics that are not personal for me. This book felt like a personal attack from an author that, despite his expertise, has never been in a situation where he needed to make a life or death decision.
I have been in that situation, and it's traumatic. Our biases are a part of our DNA, and we all have to face up to those deamons and decide how we can do better and be better.
This author is just another white man regurgitating his pious opinion. So typical American.
