Publisher's summary

A missing child … June 1933, and the Edevane family’s country house, Loeanneth, is polished and gleaming, ready for the much-anticipated Midsummer Eve party. Alice Edevane, sixteen years old and a budding writer, is especially excited. Not only has she worked out the perfect twist for her novel, she’s also fallen helplessly in love with someone she shouldn’t. But by the time midnight strikes and fireworks light up the night skies, the Edevane family will have suffered a loss so great that they leave Loeanneth forever.

An abandoned house … Seventy years later, after a particularly troubling case, Sadie Sparrow is sent on an enforced break from her job with the Metropolitan Police. Sadie retreats to her beloved grandfather’s cottage in Cornwall but soon finds herself at a loose end. Until one day, she stumbles upon an abandoned house surrounded by overgrown gardens and dense woods and learns the story of a baby boy who disappeared without a trace.

An unsolved mystery… Meanwhile, in the attic writing room of her elegant Hampstead home, the formidable Alice Edevane, now an old lady, leads a life as neatly plotted as the bestselling detective novels she writes. Until a young police detective starts asking questions about her family’s past, seeking to resurrect the complex tangle of secrets Alice has spent her life trying to escape.

The exquisite weave of plot, characters, and setting, both physical and temporal.

I highly recommend this novel. it is compelling emotionally and intellectually. The plot is complex and has many surprises bringing history and the human condition with its beauty and tragedy together in a way that evokes vivid imagery that will remain with me as a part of my memory of this family saga.

Check your library carefully!

This is same story with new narrator. Clicking on it and purchasing did not review that I already owned the book narrated by a different person. That said, the narrator for this one is acceptable, but Caroline Lee’s narration I enjoyed more. When I realized the story was so familiar? I downloaded the version narrated by Ms Lee & finished with her.

Tedious

As another reviewer has noted, this book is simply too long - it rambles and weaves through too many sub-plots and random characters that spring up unexpectedly, and leave the listener blinking and rewinding to see what we've missed. Too wordy and protracted. What seemed like a promising "read" devolved into eye-rolling boredom.

Too long

A good story; just too confusing to follow and too much detail that was not needed

History & plenty of twists

The history events tied into an interesting family with lots of layers. It was a great listen and will definitely check out more titles from this author

Twist and twist again!

Loved it!! I was hoping for good, but it was better than I expected. Wonderful character development and intrigue. I was pulled in and not wanting to stop listening until right up to the end, when I didn't want it to end!! Already looking for my next Kate Morton.

Magical

Cornwall is a magical place where magical things happen in both life and the imagination. The stories of multiple children are intertwined in reality and imagining in this wonderful book. DC Sparrow is the link between them all and their ultimate resolution. Many twists and turns await the reader as she puzzles out the mysteries of human love and behavior.
