Early one morning Commissario Guido Brunetti of the Venice Police confronts a grisly sight when the body of a young man is fished out of a fetid canal. All the clues point to a violent mugging, but for Brunetti the motive of robbery seems altogether too convenient.

The first book of the series was difficult to follow, but I found this book began to develop the detective more clearly as well as the plot. I look forward to reading number three.

Story
During intermission at the famed La Fenice opera house in Venice, Italy, a notoriously difficult and widely disliked German conductor is poisoned—and suspects abound. Guido Brunetti, a native Venetian, sets out to unravel the mystery behind the high-profile murder. To do so, he calls on his knowledge of Venice, its culture, and its dirty politics. Along the way, he finds the crime may have roots going back decades—and that revenge, corruption, and even Italian cuisine may play a role.

I chose the book because of the setting and felt that the author could have given us more of the city. The writing was good, but I found the narrator’s voice did not suit the material for me. Since this was the writer’s first venture into this genre of writing, I will try her second book to see if it is better. As an avid Louise Penny reader, I want to see this writer reach the Penny standard.

One more Strike…
Reviewed: 12-05-23
I have read the books and watched the tv series and loved both. The narration was excellent and the narrative of Robin and Strike continues with a riveting and often horrifying story. If you love a good detective story, you will enjoy this although I must admit that the I ching at the beginning of each chapter was a bit wearing at times. It left me wanting more.

A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines. But to what end?

A Three Pines Thriller
Reviewed: 01-13-23
A World of Curiosities once again brings the characters of the little Canadian community of Three Pines to life interweaving small stories within a larger one. This time the story takes us deeper into Gamauche’s life with a threat to the peaceful village and what the inspector holds dear. Recommend this to those who love Penny’s stories, but also as a first read of her works.

Strike is a character in the modern mode of Mike Hammer and Phillip Marlowe. He has all the trappings: the seedy office, the failed love relationship with the femme fatale, and the woman with the heart of gold who becomes his right hand. I enjoyed every minute and look forward to the next read.

Story
F. Scott Fitzgerald makes antebellum Baltimore his setting for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a fantastical tale with some Poe-like overtones about a baby born at age 70 who then lives life in reverse, his hair turning "in the dozen years of his life from white to iron-gray, the network of wrinkles on his face becoming less pronounced". What ramifications that creates for Benjamin's relationship with his father first and then later with his wife and his own son makes for some fantastical situations.

If you are a student or admirer of the writings of F. Scott Fitzgerald, this is a must read. I found it so different from his other works in many ways and yet the theme of the aging male longing for the unattainable seems still central in this story.
I must admit that the film version was much more to my liking, but it is always good to read the original.

Story
The received idea of Native American history - as promulgated by books like Dee Brown's mega-bestselling 1970 Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee - has been that American Indian history essentially ended with the 1890 massacre at Wounded Knee. Not only did 150 Sioux die at the hands of the US Cavalry, the sense was, but Native civilization did as well. Growing up Ojibwe on a reservation in Minnesota, training as an anthropologist, and researching Native life past and present for his nonfiction and novels, David Treuer has uncovered a different narrative.

I will listen to the book again and pass it on to others. I plan to buy the print version for my grandsons. The narrator’s beautiful voice, its tone and cadence, makes the stories glorious and grim come alive for the listener. Aside from that this storyteller imparts history from a different vantage point that all Americans should hear and read. I was engaged and moved by this book. I hope you will be as well.
