About this listen

Early one morning Commissario Guido Brunetti of the Venice Police confronts a grisly sight when the body of a young man is fished out of a fetid canal. All the clues point to a violent mugging, but for Brunetti the motive of robbery seems altogether too convenient.

When something is discovered in the victim's apartment that suggests the existence of a high-level conspiracy, Brunetti becomes convinced that somebody is taking great pains to provide a ready-made solution to the crime.

Rich with atmosphere and marvelous plotting, Death in a Strange Country is a superb novel in Donna Leon's chilling Venetian mystery series.

Criminal Governments.

Well written. This is one of the better books of the series, but most disturbing. The themes of government secrets rang too true. Corrupt powers doing as they like to build their empires and billionaire bank accounts,
The comments concerning the ways of the United States’ culture felt right and was interesting to hear from a European perspective.

More to enjoy.

Chose eating on performance as it was hard to hear if there is any background noise. I often walk outside while exercising narrators voice a bit too low w/volume turned to high. Nice accent but...
Good story however wish I’d listened to Book 1st.

Ending not what I expected!!

Interesting characters

Started out a bit slow but once into it the characters came to life. Laugh out loud funny at times; yet sadly all to much like the truth of both Italy, and the American foreign presence overseas.
Once I sped up the reading to 1.2, really liked the narrator!

All-too believable tale

Drops you into the midst of Venice ice with a tale featuring believable characters and a story with interesting twists. Great narrator

Murder Mystery

Great storyline and characters. Very descriptive. However, I sometimes felt overwhelmed w the amount of detail. But, I would definitely recommend listening to this book.

Great ecology and international relations theme!

Donna Leon chooses great themes. Guido is always charming, clever, warm-hearted but can be undone by bureaucracy and dark forces. Interesting exploration of American military bases abroad in this one as well as his relationship with his powerful aristocratic father-in-law.

Good story with twists

Nice Venetian mystery again with modern politics in there as well. The world can be depressing too much of the time.
