Story
Send us a textI am a longtime practitioner of martial arts, but my greatest love is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The depth of this practice has truly transformed the way I relate to my body, my “self” and the world around me. But most importantly it has shown me how to learn, and I am fascinated by the overlap between Stoicism and martial arts training. In this episode, I discuss some ways Stoicism can be learned much more efficiently if you approach it more like a martial art than a theoretical framework. Story
Seven years on the run from her abusive father, and with no hope of sanctuary among the dwindling pockets of human civilization, Lark is out of options. Her only leverage is a cursed power: she can thrust fear onto others, leaving all threats fleeing in terror. It’s a means of survival as she searches for a place to call home. If the campfire myths of her childhood are true, Lark’s sole chance for refuge could lie in Cagmar, the city of trolls—a brutal species and the sworn enemies of humanity.

Story
Battle rages between the dinosaur kingdoms of Cretacea. When the Fallen Star struck, it brought death and despair, ash and toxic rain. But some dinosaurs survived . . . and were changed. Their minds grew alert. They learned to speak. To dream. To wage war. As the two remaining dinosaur kingdoms fight for territory, Eleri, the disgraced son of a prince, is exiled from his home for saving an enemy soldier. Banished to the merciless Deadlands, a terrifying desert full of tar pits, poisonous gas, and ruthless carnivores, he must join forces with a group of questionable allies.

The plot was compelling and spun previous literary cliches in completely new directions. I loved the characters and their interactions, and it was so sweet to see them all bond. The narrator is incredible, and I appreciate the depth of worldbuilding the author went into—even including accents for different dinosaur kingdoms. The premise is so unique and intriguing, too. Great debut for this author, and I’m counting down until the next book comes out.

Even though thirteen-year-old Marcus Kanenas is confined to a wheelchair, he sees himself as a survivor and a dreamer. In fact, his favorite dream is of a world far away, a world where magic is as common as air, where animals tell jokes, and where trees beg people to pick their fruit. He even has a name for this place - Farworld. When Marcus magically travels to Farworld, he meets Kyja, a girl without magic in a world where spells, charms, and potions are everywhere.

Story
Five years ago, Lauren Martin was sure something was wrong with her. She had a good job in New York, an apartment in Brooklyn, a boyfriend, yet every day she wrestled with feelings of inferiority, anxiety and irritability. It wasn't until a chance encounter with a (charming, successful) stranger who revealed that she also felt these things, that Lauren set out to better understand the hold that these moods had on her, how she could change them, and began to blog about the wisdom she uncovered.
