About this listen

The Happiness Project meets So Sad Today in this "hilariously witty, unflinchingly honest" book from Words of Women founder Lauren Martin, as she contemplates the nature of negative emotions - and the insights that helped her to take control of her life (Bobbi Brown).

Five years ago, Lauren Martin was sure something was wrong with her. She had a good job in New York, an apartment in Brooklyn, a boyfriend, yet every day she wrestled with feelings of inferiority, anxiety and irritability. It wasn't until a chance encounter with a (charming, successful) stranger who revealed that she also felt these things, that Lauren set out to better understand the hold that these moods had on her, how she could change them, and began to blog about the wisdom she uncovered. It quickly exploded into an international online community of women who felt like she did: lost, depressed, moody, and desirous of change.

Inspired by her audience to press even deeper, The Book of Moods shares Lauren's journey to infuse her life with a sense of peace and stability. With observations that will resonate and inspire, she dives into the universal triggers every woman faces - whether it's a comment from your mother, the relentless grind at your job, days when you wish the mirror had a Valencia filter, or all of the above. Blending cutting-edge science, timeless philosophy, witty anecdotes and effective forms of self-care, Martin has written a powerful, intimate, and incredibly relatable chronicle of transformation, proving that you really can turn your worst moods into your best life.

Critic reviews

"A deeply relatable how-to-guide for managing your moods from a woman who gets it. This is a funny, moving memoir filled with so many a-ha moments that I had a hard time putting it down. A real asset for anyone on the quest for better emotion regulation and inner peace." (Laurie Santos, professor of psychology at Yale University and Host of The Happiness Lab podcast)

"Hilariously witty, unflinchingly honest, and brimming with hope, The Book of Moods teaches that with authenticity and a little self-coaching, you can take ownership of your emotions-and your own life. Lauren Martin's contagious curiosity leads straight to what she calls "the cornerstone of chill." And you know what? The journey is half the fun." (Bobbi Brown, best-selling author and renowned makeup artist)

"Lauren Martin names those feelings that we all have, explains why we have them, and how we can keep them from defining and dictating our lives. A fascinating, thorough, and truly helpful book. I loved it!" (Sarah Knight, New York Times best-selling author of Calm the F*ck Down)

Such a great book! Until it came to Princess Diana

This book is good and I took in every word Martin had wrote, but then it came to how Princess Diana somehow related to her message about how people can become toxic once they get into their own head. She couldn't relate this message in anything other than a deceased person? It was a weird connection that I did not appreciate. Luckily this came closer to the end of the book so I didn't have to process it for the entire time.

I would recommend that this author find a not so hot debatable topic to speak of in her future books. This could lose potential readers for her future work. This will probably be my only & last time reading from this author. Also, the narration of this book can be robotic at times. Very monotone at some points. If we could find some better voice to connect to the audience, then that would possibly engage better.

Overall, Martins talking points were taken in by me & will be considered in my daily routine.

This was a lovely light funny and insightful book! I call it a “snack” book because it’s a great book to read when you need a light pick me up. Exactly what I needed

I feel like the book is talking about me, my moods, my anxiety, just me.

Thank you Lauren, for sharing your experience with us, for sharing the quotes of all the strong women, for being honest.

I am going through a tough time, and this book is giving me light, ideas and making me feel like my reactions are normal, because I am a human, but also that life doesn't have to be so dark all the time, and not everything is urgent or the end of the world.

I'm feeling stronger and more capable of handling life, I'm appreciating my youth, and I'm feeling human.

A great listen, great narrator.

wish there were more!

The whole time I was listening I kept thinking, omg me too! It was so nice to feel like I’m not alone in the insane moods that I experience… I enjoyed the narration & the accent used as the voice of Lauren’s boyfriend; it kept me thoroughly engaged and my only wish is that the book kept going!
