Story
In this “eloquent understanding of how death is viewed through many spiritual traditions” (Publishers Weekly, starred review), Bart Ehrman recounts the long history of the afterlife, ranging from The Epic of Gilgamesh up to the writings of Augustine, focusing especially on the teachings of Jesus and his early followers. He discusses ancient guided tours of heaven and hell, in which a living person observes the sublime blessings of heaven for those who are saved and the horrifying torments of hell for those who are damned.

Story
In this highly accessible discussion, Bart Ehrman examines the most recent textual and archaeological sources for the life of Jesus, along with the history of first-century Palestine, drawing a fascinating portrait of the man and his teachings. Ehrman shows us what historians have long known about the Gospels and the man who stands behind them. Through a careful evaluation of the New Testament (and other surviving sources, including the more recently discovered Gospels of Thomas and Peter), Ehrman proposes that Jesus can be best understood as an apocalyptic prophet.

What you never heard in fundamentalism.
Reviewed: 05-18-24
Once you discover American Christian fundamentalism (IFB, Evangelical, Non-Denomination, Mainline, etc) has a theology of Jesus that is easily debunked using their own hermeneutical arguments, there is a second step. Research the historical Jesus from the unbiased scholars. Discovering that American Christian fundamentalists do not even understand Jesus for which they drafted a hermeneutical theory.(a theory that is untenable by their method), helps you understand that they are masters at being ignorant on many fronts. “Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you…” A weak theology and a weak history is one potent poisonous cocktail for people. “on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

Story
Sigma males are a difficult category of personality type. They are independent and enigmatic; it is difficult to pin them down. They like their own space, setting them apart and making them desirable. They do not necessarily wish to lead or follow and are self-assured, neither belonging to nor opposing a crowd. Anybody may develop a sigma male personality. No particular sigma was born; in most situations, an appealing image, self-esteem, and emotional strength result from a lot of hard work.

Will Wilde knows what makes the world go round. This man has studied what makes a sigma male a sigma male. This man has taught me how to be an independent sigma male and not a filthy delta male. Will Wilde has changed my life and has made me realize that we don’t need women in the world. This book has made me a full misogynist because Will told me that I need to be independent and a certified girl boss. Will, you changed my life and I love you.

Story
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Story
Jon Ward's life is divided in half: two decades inside the evangelical Christian bubble and two decades outside of it. In Testimony, Ward tells the engaging story of his upbringing in, and eventual break from, an influential evangelical church in the 1980s and 1990s. Ward sheds light on the evangelical movement's troubling political and cultural dimensions, tracing the ways in which the Jesus People movement was seduced by materialism and other factors to become politically captive rather than prophetic.

Religious Trauma but not alone!
Reviewed: 10-03-23
Religious trauma is the result of a generation of fundamentalist doctrines. We were all told and promised that fundamentalism would set the world straight and redeem all people. Create a utopian society that forever looks like 1951. Instead, trauma… deep destructive trauma but we all thought we were wrong. That we did love god enough. Now we all know, it wasn’t just us! We were not alone and books like this let us know that we are good… and that the fundamentalist were incredibly wrong. We are good and we are not alone. They are losing the power that manipulated and cheated to steal. It is getting better!

Bono puts words to the unsayable in ways many…well every sermon has failed to do well. The poetry of this memoir rescues us from the linear trope that all thing work out. This embraces the complexity that does not give answers but shares in solidarity. We see that smalls things grow with Bono, U2, etc and we would be better off giving ourselves to small things. Best produced audiobook book I have ever heard. Thank you Bono. Much love.

Much of what plagues us—people pleasing, staying in stale relationships, negative habits—all point to what happens when we are out of touch with what truly makes us feel whole.
