We are surrounded by strife, anxiety, anger, & disinformation. I needed hope, purpose, & a nudge forward to get out of my funk. I that the Bishop for providing that nudge.

Story
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Fascinating reveal of how we seem to have bouts of repetition. Fills in a & expands on her history podcast Ultra.
It’s difficult to acknowledge how much inspiration we provided an evil regime & how welcome those warped ideals became here.
There are many mirrored characters. The similarities between then & now, pretty frightening.

I could get lost in this investigation
Reviewed: 12-29-23
Remember how we used to hold ourselves up as pillars of the world with our rich history of democracy? The history texts in school glossed over the desecration of Native Americans. How insane it is that such torture continued into the 20th century, on so many levels?
I could get lost in this investigation for years. It’s beyond heartbreaking & infuriating. I wanted to re-read before seeing the movie but now want to delve into the mystery even further.

I felt compassion, sorrow, anger, empowerment, understanding, grief, & acceptance, well kinda on the acceptance.
In any case, it was wicked good.

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

A clear-sighted revelation, a deep penetration into the world of Scientology by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Looming Tower, the now-classic study of al-Qaeda’s 9/11 attack. Based on more than two hundred personal interviews with current and former Scientologists—both famous and less well known—and years of archival research, Lawrence Wright uses his extraordinary investigative ability to uncover for us the inner workings of the Church of Scientology.

Intriguing & Frightening

He sells himself as a nuclear physicist who had a brilliant military career. In reality he was an awful student that dropped out of college & his military career had far more blunders than most.
L. Ron Hubbard, a desperate yet charismatic malignantly narcissistic science fiction writer, creates a religion with just enough grains of initial reasonableness to entice people searching for something.
It’s fascinating, mind blowing, sad & terrifying that Scientology continues to exist, but leaving it… well, I get that the price may be too high.

If you a woman, or love women, it’s personal.
Reviewed: 02-26-23
A work of fiction, based on realism. Never realized just how closely Canadian history, with regards to women’s autonomy & respect for their rights, mirrored that of the United States. In fact, things took even longer to change in many ways. No matter where you stand, if you’re a woman, it’s personal. This book certainly is timely, given the changes in some states.

In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life-changing decision to stop running forever. This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

My heart & my head are really full at the moment. This is 100% Viola Davis’s story, her journey, & I’m so grateful to has tagged along.
“Viola, who are you?” asked Will Smith
“Look, I’m always going to be that 15-year-old boy whose girlfriend broke up with him,” Smith explained. “That’s always going to be me. So, who are you?”
“There I was, a working actress with steady gigs, Broadway credits, multiple industry awards, and a reputation of bringing professionalism and excellence to any project. Hell, Oprah knew who I was. Yet, sitting there conversing with Will Smith, I was still that little, terrified, third-grade Black girl.

After 16 novels, Jacqueline Winspear has taken the bold step of turning to memoir, revealing the hardships and joys of her family history. Both shockingly frank and deftly restrained, her story tackles the difficult, poignant, and fascinating family accounts of her paternal grandfather’s shell shock; her mother’s evacuation from London during the Blitz; and her soft-spoken animal-loving father’s torturous assignment to an explosives team during WWII.

Loved learning about the author’s youth, family, and background. Maisie Dobbs is one of my favorite heroines & recognizing the origins of some of who she is & what she’s experienced, has been a delight. It is our flaws & imperfections that make us compelling characters. Jacqueline Winspear gets that.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.
