I enjoy this Waterman series very much. The characters are interesting and likable and the writing is very good, too. Altogether entertaining whether you’re reading or listening. I have to admit I don’t think Mr. Lawler is cast well. His voice is too high and even kind of scratchy. I don’t begrudge any actor work. I just wish he hadn’t got this specific job. Leo’s voice would be a kind of lazy baritone in my imagination.

The narrator lacked a little testosterone for my taste. But he did the various voices pretty well and his diction was clear. The story was OK and the plot was interesting. The characters were also interesting and the dialog was convincing. I can’t rave about it but it was worthwhile, at least.

Winter has come to Highway 117, a remote road through the Utah desert trafficked only by oddballs, fugitives, and those looking to escape the world.

At the beginning,, I thought the premise of a trucker babysitting two children and a dog while driving his truck into the Utah desert in dicey weather was just short of silly. But Ben, voiced by narrator, Graham Winston, grew on me. The story unfolded in ever more complex ways, peopled by unpredictable, interesting characters. It’s a long trip from the first to the last mile on this intricate journey. Not bad at all.

The last time anyone in Cottonwood County, Wyoming saw Sheriff's Deputy Foster Redus, he was bloody, cussing, and driving his pimped-out pickup into the November darkness. A week before Christmas, rancher Thomas David Burrell was arrested for the assault and charged with the deputy's murder, since neither Redus nor his truck had been seen since the Monday after Thanksgiving. The prosecutor later set Burrell free due to insufficient evidence, but with the whole county still suspecting him of the crime...

Jane McLaughlin makes the book better
Reviewed: 09-05-21
Apologies to Ms McLinn. Her book is fine, the characters are appealing and the plot is good. But the narrator takes the book up a notch with her warm alto and perfect, but unaffected, diction. I know this is a series, and while I won’t avoid listening to another episode if the price is right, I won’t go out of my way to find one either. Better than average but not great.

This book will be best appreciated by listeners old enough to recall the Cold War and the ‘70s. I don’t like Barbara Rosenblat’s reading of other books I’ve heard. But she isn’t bad in this narration. She gets the voices and accents pretty well this time, and her pacing is better here. The series is charming and pleasant. If you want an nice, unchallenging, slightly nostalgic book, this is a good choice.

All-in-all pretty fair. But while I have nothing against romance or a happy romp in the hay, I don’t like it when a female protagonist seems to always have the emotional need of a man, as in this book. Leading men seem to often be able to carry a story without female back-up. Debbie Andreen was well cast and did a good job narrating. But the recording kept shutting off. It got to be quite a nuisance to have to keep turning it back on. This happens only with Audible books. I’ve never experienced that with Chirp books.

Mr. Jayston did a fine job of narrating the story. Le Carre is an author of note, of course. I like his Smiley character very much. Overall it seemed a little stuffy and dated, but that may also be its appeal.

Obscene in two ways
Reviewed: 07-10-21
The writing may actually be pretty good. But for me there were too many detailed sex scenes and way too much equally obscene violence. I’m not a prude and I’m not squeamish, but I stopped about 30% of the way into the book. The female narrator was OK but I didn’t care at all for the male narrator. I think he’s talented because he read several characters with vocal changes. But his voice and pronunciation were unattractive to me. I can’t recommend this title.
