Story
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Keep Writing, Mr. Herron!
Reviewed: 01-26-24
I've been dreading the end of my current favorite series (plural) and was hoping there are more "out there" to love. This is it. I read the first two Slough House books and am looking forward to reading (on Audible) all the books by this author and performer.
One small grumble, nothing to subtract a star, though: I had to listen to the first book three times, mostly because I loved it, but partly because I couldn't tell when the point of view had changed characters. And there don't seem to be chapter markers in the downloaded file, that are compatible with my SanDisk mp3 player. (to go back and re-listen to a chapter) I live in an isolated area with slow expensive internet, making downloading to a player a necessity. I listen to audiobooks constantly while going about my life, and the three mp3 players are in near continual use.
Otherwise, everything is wonderful and I'm delighted to find a new author to follow. What a treat to find Mr. Herron.

Story
The true story of what took place in Donald Trump’s White House during a disastrous 2020 has never before been told in full. What was really going on around the president, as the government failed to contain the coronavirus and over half a million Americans perished? Who was influencing Trump after he refused to concede an election he had clearly lost and spread lies about election fraud? To answer these questions, Phil Rucker and Carol Leonnig reveal a dysfunctional and bumbling presidency’s inner workings in unprecedented, stunning detail.

Fascinating and horrifying
Reviewed: 12-10-22
The reader's delivery was matter-of-fact, as a fact based narrative should be. This is a narrative of the final year of the former guy's residence in the White House. Readers/listeners who closely followed the news and commentary will find only a few surprises. However, the authors present the facts in chronological order, which is helpful when you've learned that something happened via editorial or twitter comment. Notable are the descriptions of trump's responses to any bad news (the pandemic developments for example), and staff responses leading up to; and following the events of the insurrection on January 6th. This is where the surprises were for me; especially in the concern and communications between our senior military. Until the nation was safely in the hands of another President, they rarely spoke for public consumption. I heartily recommend this book to every citizen. It should be required reading for everyone in a National elected office.

I loved one of Penman's other books but at 32 hour point (36 hours total), this exhausted me. Read the Wikipedia and you'll get the gist. A fictionalized account of the Hundred Years War shouldn't take 36 hours.

Mitchard's writing is so entrancing that I was reluctant to stop listening to eat supper. A slightly implausible story involving two children with some kind of ESP skills, but who knows... The story is helped along with the protagonist's possession of large reservoirs of money. But, I love Mitchard's writing and after all, it's fiction.
