Story
When Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors. Elwood’s only salvation is his friendship with fellow “delinquent” Turner, which deepens despite Turner’s conviction that Elwood is hopelessly naive, that the world is crooked, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble.

Pulitzer-winning journalist and best-selling author (Freeman) Leonard Pitts, Jr.'s new historical novel is a great American tale of race and war, following three characters from the Jim Crow South as they face the enormous changes World War II triggers in the United States. Hell
Reviewed: 10-20-24
I enjoyed this book for bringing to life the real story of life for Black people in the American South during the Jim Crow era. I liked how the story was told unvarnished - it didn't have to be real because it was factual. Black people lived through the hell white people created for them. White people lived their own hell. It has to be some form of hell to hate something, someone every day you live and breathe. And then to be the black/white person who acknowledges the wrong-ness of the Jim Crow South and be helpless to change it- another level of hell.

Story
Mosley presents distinct characters as they struggle to move through the world in each of these stories - heroes who are awkward, nerdy, self-defeating, self-involved, and, on the whole, odd. He overturns the stereotypes that corral black male characters and paints a subtle, powerful portrait of each of these unique individuals.

I was not really in tune with this one by Mr. Mosley. I felt the possibilities of bad things happening for no good reason in just about all the stories except for or especially for the story titled Breathless. I don't think I would recommend it to anyone other than how you tell a friend to "taste this" knowing it's not good but you want them to have your same bad taste experience.

Story
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

I liked the story. It kept my interest but I had to go to Google ( Thank you, Google) to straighten out the characters. I love the way the author was able to write the story the way we actually live - with many people doing many things as we are doing one thing - the main characters were not in a bubble but had do much life around them.

I listened to this book knowing it would be a quick listen but had no idea how much could be packed into such a short story. It makes me even more aware that cults and families can be dangerous things. Love plays such a large part in what makes these things work, whether it is for the good or the bad as Nyla's book of herbs was titled.

I enjoyed the storyline and accept that it makes no sense. For me there seemed to be a lot of unanswered questions about the third main character but it's fiction after all. The only disappointing thing about the story is that it seemed more drawn out than usual.

The story had just as much predictability to it as it had twists and turns. It was enjoyable in that the author did not make the reader have to do too much work but it was still work the toil it took to do the job. What stood out for me was that this story gave both the protagonists and the antagonist the same human qualities in the end. It is hard to imagine that someone could unalive a situation on accident or on purpose and chalk it up to "life" no real remorse, just "life" and still be likable and able to sleep easy at night.

I was both horrified and outraged at this story. It is so close in many ways of the world we live in today that it is unnerving. It is almost impossible for me to review this beyond the words, " Read and Take Heed". I cannot give this review and give this story the justice that it needs. I can only urge everyone, both men and women to read it and don't let these fictional words become our factual lives.
