I found the reader's trilogy of books to be a truly inspiring read. The author's voice, especially in portraying Christian's journey, was captivating. The theme of hope, even in the darkest of times, and the possibility of change for the better, resonate deeply with me.

Story
Hell Tanner isn't the sort of guy you'd mistake for a hero: he's a fast-driving car thief, a smuggler, and a stone-cold killer. Facing life in prison for his various crimes, he's given a choice: Rot away his remaining years in a tiny jail cell or drive cross-country and deliver a case of antiserum to the plague-ridden people of Boston, Massachusetts.

Before there was Mad Max, before Duel, before Smoky and the Bandit, even before Easy Rider, there was this 1968 paean to tough, bandit bikers with hearts of gold. Anti-hero Hell Tanner is drafted ('Nam era readers could appreciate) to get the serum cure from California to plague-ridden Boston, traversing through the postwar hellscape known as Damnation Alley. Highly recommended.

The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

They call me mad, but I don’t see anything wrong with using science to create the perfect monster girl. They call me insane, but I just want to live my life with a harem of beautiful cat-girls, bear-girls, fox-girls, snake-girls, and...well, pretty much any type of monster girl. They call me a megalomaniac, but why wouldn’t any red blooded man want to make cute babies with all these beautiful monster girls? They call me evil, but they just don’t realize that I’d destroy anyone who tries to harm my monster girls.

Story
This is a fascinating introduction to the history of Western astronomy, from prehistoric times to the origins of astrophysics in the mid-19th century. Historical records are first found in Babylon and Egypt, and after two millennia the arithmetical astronomy of the Babylonians merged with the Greek geometrical approach to culminate in the Almagest of Ptolemy. This legacy was transmitted to the Latin West via Islam and led to Copernicus's claim that the Earth is in motion.

The organization of the book was good, making it easy to understand the concepts. Not just charting scientific progress, the author also documented mistaken conceptions of the universe.

Bethany's Sin is a tiny, picturesque village in rural Pennsylvania. Its tree-lined streets, beautiful houses, and manicured exteriors offer - or appear to offer - both peace and a place of refuge. Evan Reid, a man haunted by his memories of the Vietnam War and by a history of viscerally disturbing dreams, comes to the village with his wife and daughter, hoping to make a fresh start after a series of discouraging setbacks. At first, all goes as planned.

Story
The American empire emerged from the shadows of World War II. As the nation's influence swept the globe with near impunity, a host of evil forces followed—from racism, exploitation, and military invasion to killer clowns, flying saucers, and monsters borne of a fear of the other. By viewing American imperial history through the prism of the horror genre, Dark Carnivals lays bare how the genre shaped us, distracted us, and gave form to a violence as American as apple pie.

Poole makes the stretch between the development of politics as related to horror movies and fiction. Sadly, a brand of left wing politics haunts this tale. Worse than his other, better books.

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Courtroom Drama makes no sense.
Reviewed: 01-03-23
The story goes well, until . . . .The trial. There was far too little to convict, for such a serious crime. The rules of evidence were mostly ignored. Who knew you could ask leading questions of your own witnesses. The lawyers asked too many questions, when any trial attorney would have left those points for summation. Verdict: Delia Owens is guilty of being utterly ignorant of the US legal system. Must be because she spent most of her life in Africa, ably running a nature preserve.
