About this listen

The Perry family's new house is perfect - except for the weird behavior of the neighbors, and that odd smell coming from a dark corner in the basement. Pity no one warned the family about the house. Now it's too late. Because the darkness at the bottom of the basement stairs is rising.

The first one made me cringe and I thought “Surely I don’t have to sit through another one of those vulgar descriptions.” Needless to say there was plenty more and it ALMOST ruined it for me... otherwise it was creepy at many points and wasn’t half bad.

The MULTIPLE sex scenes made me uncomfortable.

If you could sum up The Haunted in three words, what would they be?

Compelling, scary, spooky

What other book might you compare The Haunted to and why?

"The Haunting" which was made into a movie. Because it had a similar theme.

Which scene was your favorite?

Don't recall

If you could rename The Haunted, what would you call it?

Scared to Death

Any additional comments?

I loved this book it was creepy and kept me listening to the end I didn't want to turn it off (maybe the house influenced me)...

Maybe The House Kept Me Listening

The ol’ haunted house but has been pretty hashed out - let’s be real - so, I didn’t have any high expectations I picked this title mostly just to pass the time. Imagine my surprise when this was fairly original, suspenseful and engaging.
It’s still a haunted house story so don’t expect the wheel to be reinvented here, but it’s well thought out and written and genuinely scary.

Better than expected

The longer the book goes on, the more drawn out it becomes. Also... the characters and their actions don’t feel believable at all. You’re left thinking “no one actually acts like this in real life” - which detracts from the story. Also a lot of long backstory over halfway into the book that does nothing but fill space. Performance was spot on however.

I didn't expect this story to be as good as it was. The narrator did a good job also, I would recommend this one

Certainly a new approach to the haunted house tale... well written and well developed characters, but the story itself was a bit lacking. Perhaps it was how long it took to get to the ‘twist’. The link to the twist felt a bit forced and contrived. Not a bad story, but not a great one either.

Different

Would you listen to The Haunted again? Why?

Yes. I listen to my book while driving and sometimes miss small sections.

What did you like best about this story?

The "boo" that was waiting when I least expected it.

What about Dan Butler’s performance did you like?

His ability to help me distinguish what character was speaking by the tone he gave and kept for each one.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Are you afraid of the dark?

Any additional comments?

I love Bentley Little. He is right up there with Stephen King and Dean Koontz! I'm looking forward to "reading" more!

A great page turner
