Story
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

new concepts I've not heard before
Reviewed: 03-08-25
What I loved most about this book is the fresh concepts in the storyline. I've read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy and most of it's just the same story rehashed somewhere else. This story is not like that. This is something completely new that I've never heard in part anywhere else. I really enjoyed it. Its a little bit confusing because *spoiler* One of the main characters has three different names in this book at different times in her life. I did have to re-listen to the last two chapters a second time, but I'm ready for the next book. The series is pretty intriguing so far!

Story
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

A romance bibliophiles dream read
Reviewed: 11-04-24
This book was total comfort food. The authors eloquence with dialogue was refreshing. So many romance authors miss the mark with dialogue. And since it sets the tone the whole book, Well, I've never really been able to find a good romance author until now!
SPOILERS...
This book has all the feels! I didn't cry when we heard about their tragic childhoods, I didn't cry when I heard about Siobhan's medical issue, or when they broke up, or when Siobhan met her fate. But how the tears started streaming once the cover art of the book was finally revealed... Siobhan sitting in the shop looking out at her characters. Perfect ending.

it was nice to hear some of the backstory between Suan and Moraine. I guess I did not realize how very close they were when I started this series. Also Elieda.... I would have liked to learn a little more - like why she originally wanted to be a green but ended up choosing red. What happened there - maybe I missed it, I'll have to listen again, but it was interesting as origin stories go. The most interesting part was learning about Lan... and I'll say no more.

A new tale of an empowered sleeping beauty. A tale where women have a choice to choose their own destiny beyond the will of princes and kings. And "beyond shitty medieval gender roles." (my favorite line in the story).

I almost never leave reviews on audible but I did this time because...
I really hope Graham McTavish reads more books for audible because he definitely has the voice for it. Sam was also a delight to listen to! I could listen to these boys talk all day! I call them boys and the light-hearted sense because this book is about an adventure they took together. It's not meant as a slight in any way. You'd have to be blind to not know they are both very attractive men.
I was originally drawn to outlander because its a very well done period piece. Also as a fan of Diana G's books- whoever's in charge of casting for that show deserves many medals because they got it spot on with the actors. I don't watch a lot of TV because I read books. I'd rather read books. however, when a favorite book series gets done well, I tend to get enthralled with everyone who has anything to do with it. I'm not a super fan as they talk about in the books. I think following people around like that is just weird. I just appreciate their well crafted art. I think the thing that makes it so great- as well as this book- is the love the artists, writers, actors and everyone else involved that you get a sense that everybody is so very passionate about the project. You can also tell through the reading of this book how much these two men love each other and appreciate each other and encourage each other.
Lastly, as a fan of Monty Python, these two are spot on. There is great humor in this book and they perform it hilariously! I encourage any fans of world history or Scotland or whiskey or adventures or outlander to definitely read this book. You'll be happy you did.

Dr Matt Winning is a stand-up comedian and environmental economist with a PhD in climate change policy, which means he's the sort of doctor who will rush to your side if you fall ill on a plane, but only to berate you for flying. We are currently facing a global climate emergency. You've probably noticed. But why does the end of the world need to be so depressing? Hot Mess aims to both lighten the mood and enlighten listeners on climate change. This is an audiobook for people who care about climate change but aren't doing much about it.

His accent made it a tiny bit challenging to understand so I had to listen more carefully but overall the content was good; well researched and thought out. Unfortunately, he completely lost me when he started joking about killing dogs out in ch 8. I stopped listening at this point. Joking about killing dogs to save the planet is not funny, regardless of the context.
