About this listen
"A vivid, subversive and feminist reimagining of Sleeping Beauty, where implacable destiny is no match for courage, sisterhood, stubbornness and a good working knowledge of fairy tales." (Katherine Arden, author of the Winternight trilogy)
USA Today best-selling author Alix E. Harrow's A Spindle Splintered brings her patented charm to a new version of a classic story.
It's Zinnia Gray's 21st birthday, which is extra-special because it's the last birthday she'll ever have. When she was young, an industrial accident left Zinnia with a rare condition. Not much is known about her illness - just that no one has lived past 21.
Her best friend Charm is intent on making Zinnia's last birthday special with a full sleeping beauty experience, complete with a tower and a spinning wheel. But when Zinnia pricks her finger, something strange and unexpected happens, and she finds herself falling through worlds, with another sleeping beauty, just as desperate to escape her fate.

Story
In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box. But when the Eastwood sisters - James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna - join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement.

Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

Story
Meet Toadling. On the day of her birth, she was stolen from her family by the fairies, but she grew up safe and loved in the warm waters of faerieland. Once an adult though, the fae ask a favor of Toadling: return to the human world and offer a blessing of protection to a newborn child. Simple, right? If only. Centuries later, a knight approaches a towering wall of brambles, where the thorns are as thick as your arm and as sharp as swords. He's heard there's a curse here that needs breaking, but it's a curse Toadling will do anything to uphold.

As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon knows she has to hide her magic, keep her head down, and stay away from other witches so their powers don’t mingle and draw attention. And as an orphan who lost her parents at a young age and was raised by strangers, she’s used to being alone and she follows the rules...with one exception: an online account, where she posts videos "pretending" to be a witch. She thinks no one will take it seriously.

It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

Alex Green is a young girl in a world much like ours, except for its most seminal event: the Mass Dragoning of 1955, when hundreds of thousands of ordinary wives and mothers sprouted wings, scales, and talons; left a trail of fiery destruction in their path; and took to the skies. Was it their choice? What will become of those left behind? Why did Alex’s beloved aunt Marla transform but her mother did not? Alex doesn’t know. It’s taboo to speak of.

Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

Fae exist only in children’s stories, or so I thought. That was before a nightmarish creature of the Fae Realm dropped into my life. He claimed a seven-pointed mark on my skin signified my magical lineage, the bit of DNA my mother passed down. Days after I arrive in the Fae Realm, I’m thrown into a series of trials titled ‘The Devotion’. I must compete with demons, vampires, elves and more who want to claim their place at the future King’s side. I have no interest in this guy, but it doesn’t help that the King-to-be is a gorgeous, brooding fae.

No fairy tale will ever seem quite the same again!

For cynical 23-year-old August, moving to New York City is supposed to prove her right: that things like magic and cinematic love stories don’t exist, and the only smart way to go through life is alone. She can’t imagine how waiting tables at a 24-hour pancake diner and moving in with too many weird roommates could possibly change that. And there’s certainly no chance of her subway commute being anything more than a daily trudge through boredom and electrical failures.

Very good
This book is great for pasting time and a thriller but not the best for children under the age of 10.

Pretty fun short YA
I love Alice Harrows writing but her attention to the delivery for he story was certainly for a younger audience YA audience. Writing quality was meh… it’s a great beach day read.

Quick Retelling
What a nice retelling. Bitter sweet laced in reality. Great for caregivers. Made me laugh several times and reminded me of friends that are family. Highly recommend.

Not the Best but Not the Worst
A.E.H. is an amazing writer and her characters usually have more depth and better backstories than the ones in this book, and for whatever reason it felt rushed. The heroin came off as ditzy and sort of dumb, but I think that had more to do with the narrator, although she did use some funny voices for various characters. Will still listen to Harrows “Mended Mirrors” when it’s released, but I’ll be totally disappointed if it’s like this one.

Sweet, fun, but not a lot of complexity
I enjoyed the basic concept and the characters, but the story was a bit simplistic. It’s a fun passive listen.

Always a fun time
Harrow doesn’t disappoint! I wish the reader had had a little more…I dunno…chutzpah. She was pretty bland and I found myself thinking that if I had read the book myself I might have felt much more excited during the exciting parts. But the story itself was really great. As usual.

Quick Retelling with LGBTQIA+ Rep
Quick new adult read with an LBGTQIA+ twist. Trigger warnings for hospitals. Trigger warnings for terminal illness, well not as deep as other works. It is still a great lesson.
The narrator did great job of making the characters sound young without making them sound like children. All of the main characters are adults, which is fantastic.
I listen to this right after listening to 10,000 doors of January. If you were expecting that kind of depth, this is not that it is however a different take on sleeping beauty. I find it a refreshing take. No spice. No gore. Check your medical triggers.

Alix E. Harrow can do no literary wrong. This book, I like like it." *throws book on the ground* ANOTHER!"

best easter egg meme drop in decades.
no actual surprises, but that just means the story makes sense and is satisfying to its own rules. (MCU, GOT, Dr Who, I'm glaring at you...)
But "They're lesbians, Harold" legit killed me.

A Woman Who Controls Her Own Narrative
A new tale of an empowered sleeping beauty. A tale where women have a choice to choose their own destiny beyond the will of princes and kings. And "beyond shitty medieval gender roles." (my favorite line in the story).
