I don't like Virtual Voice
Reviewed: 12-08-24
The voice changes very little with characters or emotions.
When a character stutters, it says the letter instead of its sound. ("W-what?" becomes "Double-you what?")
The voice doesn't pause at "..." points. ("I... sorry" becomes "I sorry." If I didn't read the Kindle story, I would have thought the character's English was not their first language.)

I wish the rest of the books were in sets. One credit or $9.99 is a lot to spend on a three hour book.

The narrator mispronounced the author's name. I'm a fan of his cooking shows and his name is pronounced RYKE-lin (rhymes with "like")
There's cussing in Book Chapter 2

Pandora Williams is Nocturne Falls' most successful real estate agent. And least successful witch. Her magic never has the intended outcome, but she's learned to live with that. Mostly. Yes, it sucks, but what can she do? Then a hot new neighbor shows up and suddenly her magic works. Very cool, but very suspect. Especially since he's a total non-believer.

It's a good series. Funny moments. Minor cursing.

BJ Harrison is a good narrator. I like the way he voices the older females Corette, Birdie, Alice and Gertrude. Most male narrators are awful with female characters. Cole doesn't have an accent (his father does), which I thought maybe he lost by becoming a teacher. But in subsequent books he has a North Carolina drawl. The cursing isn't different from what's heard on television these days. At least it isn't vulgar.

His voice is so deep and gravelly, and the characters almost sound the same, even the females. Dual narration with a female artist would be better.

Book 1: They need to redo the narration. She calls Ramon (ra-MOAN) the casino employee "Ray-mon". Gwen Alder's last name is called "Adler". At one point she's called "Grace Adler" who was the title character of the NBC comedy Will & Grace.
Book 3: Narrator pronounces Curacao (KUR-a-saow) as "ka-RAH-ko"
Book 5: In the description, Roland's last name is Baker. In the story, his last name is Kirk. I thought it was another narration error, but it's the same in the Kindle version.

They need to put a disclaimer in the description so I don't waste time or money on something I don't want to hear. I let one go in Chapter 6, but by Chapter 10, I was really into the story, but the cussing happened more frequently. That wasn't fair. If I had known ahead of time, I wouldn't have selected it. Can't they make edited versions of these things? I really like the story and I want to know how it ends, but I can't stand reading/listening to foul language. I get enough of it at work.
