This is an intriguing story with compelling protagonists. I paid attention to the details as I was wondering -- who done it? Narration and production was-done.

The heart of this audiobook lay in its compelling protagonists and their nuanced relationships, woven into an undeniably intriguing narrative. I was particularly impressed by the author's ability to illustrate the scenes, a quality amplified by the rich descriptive narration. While my own impatience occasionally wished for a quicker pace, I recognize that the more deliberate speed likely enhanced the slow-burn tension integral to this type of story, effectively mirroring the methodical and hushed world of classic Russian spycraft.

Growing up in the shadow of Dodger Stadium meant some childhood trips to see the boys in blue. Back in the '60s, Sunset Boulevard was my hustle. With a shoeshine kit and a dream, I'd earn enough to walk those few blocks to the stadium. I even remember the roar of the crowd and a faint melody drifting out one summer night – the Beatles! To this day, I kick myself for not finding a way inside, even though I caught a glimpse and heard their iconic sound.

Later on, life brought me incredible moments within those stadium walls. I've sat behind home plate at World Series games, the energy electric. And then there was that one unforgettable day, sneaking in with my buddies to watch Reggie Jackson... and then that strikeout. We didn't have tickets, but the thrill of being there, the collective gasp of the crowd – it's a story in itself, one I often think could fill a screenplay if only I had that knack. Los Angeles is full of stories like that, a mix of triumphs and near misses, good times and heartbreaking ones.

I enjoyed this and it kept my attention always looking for what was next. The main protagonist's situation was something I understood and I'm glad that this is included in the narrative.

There was enough time to get to know the characters, and I began to understand them in a fictional way or better. However, with what's going on in the world today, I had to wonder... Someone said I heard that they are trying to discourage free speech, so enjoy it before all we can do is chant to the dear leader. First, they came for them... Remember, it's - We the People... and, United We Stand, Divided We Fall.

I'll admit I was preoccupied listening to this while exhausted and doing a project, so my review isn't reliable on this one. Naturally, the narrator was perfect as usual. But, I felt there was no conclusion. It dropped off like the edge of a cliff. Maybe there are more books in the series or the author just gave up. Nevertheless, it was a story with promise. Maybe I'll listen. Again, another time to see if I missed something.

The story is interesting, but for my taste, it could be darker. It does skirt the darkness and sometimes that's all a listener wants. It's a bit of a teaser of what may be a protagonist in a series, maybe one I'm not familiar with. If it isn't already, it seems to me there is a lot of potential here with the main protagonist. I enjoyed the story, and it held my attention, albeit a little mild from my years of listening to darker thriller and crime novels.

American Dirt is a powerful and deeply moving story that stays with you long after you finish reading or listening. Jeanine Cummins crafts a narrative that humanizes the complex realities of immigration, forcing readers to confront the personal stories behind the headlines. We are drawn into the harrowing journey of Lydia and her son, Luca, as they flee unimaginable danger in Mexico and embark on a perilous trek toward the United States.

What struck me most about this book is its ability to evoke empathy. Cummins's vivid prose paints a visceral picture of the challenges faced by migrants, from the constant threat of violence and extortion to the heartbreaking sacrifices they are forced to make. We witness Lydia's transformation from a bookstore owner to a desperate mother fighting for her son's survival, and we feel her fear, her resilience, and her unwavering love. This isn't an immigration story; it's a story about family, survival, and the universal desire for a better life.

American Dirt is a crucial read, especially in today's climate. It offers a much-needed perspective on the human cost of closed borders and the desperation that drives people to risk everything for a chance at safety and opportunity. While the book doesn't shy away from the harsh realities of the journey, it also celebrates the strength and humanity of those who undertake it. It reminds us that behind every statistic, behind every political debate, there are real people with real stories, dreams, and fears.

This book isn't about taking a political stance; it's about expanding our understanding and fostering compassion. It encourages us to look beyond the labels and see the human beings behind them. It reminds us that empathy is not a finite resource and that we have a responsibility to listen to and understand the experiences of others, especially those who are most vulnerable. "American Dirt" is a story that needs to be heard, a story that can change hearts and minds, and a story that will stay with you long after you turn the final page. Whether you choose the print or audiobook edition, this is an experience that will leave a lasting impact.

The audiobook "The Signal" features high-quality production, with excellent recording and narration. The story is intriguing, capturing the listener's attention with its compelling narrative. However, the absence of a definitive conclusion creates a feeling of incompleteness, leaving the audience wanting more—this is a testament to the strength of the narrative. Made me wonder, you know, the moonwalk or Wag-The-Dog ;)

Despite this minor drawback, the audiobook is enjoyable and well-crafted, making it a worthwhile choice for those who appreciate thought-provoking and imaginative stories.
