One of the best books I have ever read
Reviewed: 06-19-22
I have a feeling this book is going to change my life. It has already begun to help my marriage, my hope for the future, and my sleep hygiene. The stories and case studies provided are diverse enough to prove this works for a broad swath of people far beyond a privileged few. I'm a voracious reader and I've read this book twice. I'm going back for a third time just to be sure I commit as much to memory as I can. Can't wait for more by BJ Fogg and his Habiteers!

Story
As high achievers, we’ve been conditioned to believe that the path to success is paved with relentless work. That if we want to overachieve, we have to overexert, overthink, and overdo. That if we aren’t perpetually exhausted, we’re not doing enough. But lately, working hard is more exhausting than ever. And the more depleted we get, the more effort it takes to make progress. Stuck in an endless loop of “Zoom, eat, sleep, repeat”, we’re often working twice as hard to achieve half as much.

Apart from a quibble about what is truly "easier" in fundraising, I drank in this book. In addition to being useful, it is heartfelt. I'm so glad I stuck with it. I will be re-reading this book as I want the message to sink in even deeper. Thank you, Greg McKeown!

Courage Is Calling

Story
Almost every religion, spiritual practice, philosophy and person grapples with fear. The most repeated phrase in the Bible is “Be not afraid.” The ancient Greeks spoke of phobos, panic and terror. It is natural to feel fear, the Stoics believed, but it cannot rule you. Courage, then, is the ability to rise above fear, to do what’s right, to do what’s needed, to do what is true. And so it rests at the heart of the works of Marcus Aurelius, Aristotle, and CS Lewis, alongside temperance, justice, and wisdom.

Good but hard to recommend

It was very practical and helpful. Not a super compelling read, especially because of the reader's voice but also because of details included that sounded difficult to relate to and privileged.

Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter
- By: Ben Goldfarb

Story
In Eager, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern idea of what a healthy landscape looks like and how it functions is wrong, distorted by the fur trade that once trapped out millions of beavers from North America's lakes and rivers. The consequences of losing beavers were profound: streams eroded, wetlands dried up, and species from salmon to swans lost vital habitat. Today, a growing coalition of "Beaver Believers" recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier, for humans and non-humans alike, than those without them.

Good book!
Reviewed: 05-10-20
I had no idea about most of the concepts in this book. Elucidating and comprehensive! A few of the "writerly" metaphors are a tad overbearing, and in a few cases it's white-centering but otherwise a great book! I recommend it!
The narrator leaves a bit to be desired. He mispronounced several words and at least one place name. The "quotation" voice he uses for women is a tad cringeworthy.

While this simple and time-honored classic is a gem, gendered aspects really do make it harder for women to imagine ourselves in leadership. It's time for another edition of this great book.
