Story
Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Not expected and a bit let down
Reviewed: 03-21-24
Fourth Wing was so good that I was expecting the same with this one. Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed and give 3 1/2 stars for this book. The story was still very good overall, but I almost struggled getting through some parts. It seemed like the characters really lost their emotional connections to one another, which made the spicy scenes more distracting than adding to the story. The story was too cluttered and the in the audiobook version, the narrator was screaming a play by play of both the fights as well as love scenes with the same intensity. This narration was over the top and ridiculously over exaggerated, causing me to lose focus while thinking to myself that this narrator needed to get a hold of herself. I wanted the book to hurry and end but I’m still intrigued to see what happens next. I’ll probably just read the next book because the audiobook might have played a part of why I didn’t like this one as much.

DNF shelf
Reviewed: 03-13-24
I suffered my way to chapter 36 for my book club but then placed it on my DNF shelf. The audiobook was free for Audible unlimited but that made the book even worse. There was not one single character that I liked, even the Raven. The storyline would have been interesting had the characters not been so shallow, underdeveloped, and incredibly annoying. The narrator couldn’t read the lines without placing awkward pauses everywhere and as much as I love Ravens, I would have shooed this cringy one away. It was strange, even speeding it up didn’t help.

Cringey

The character build was shallow, the story was weak and cringey, as was the overpowering sex that outweighed everything so much that I couldn’t remember what was actually happening in the storyline. The only thing good was the narrators.

First, I’ll just say that listening to the audible version is definitely the right decision! The narrator is so great!
The story was not only a very interesting mystery but a love story too. It was unpredictable for the most part and played out very well, although, I have a few questions. I enjoyed this very much and couldn’t stop listening!!

This was mediocre entertainment. Not bad but not great. There was one funny part that had me giggling but it was short lived. The narrator was good but had issues with recording his breathing and the sound would go from a whisper to blaring.

Yawn
Reviewed: 08-28-23
This was the most boring book I have tried to read in awhile. I really tried to stick with it but it drags on without anything happening! The narrator, in the audible version, has strange sound effects that distracts from the story, because it takes you out of the already boring story to think about how strange it is to make that effect without actually paying attention to what the girl is saying.😣
