Worst book on the series

This installment was a mishmash of everything mystical. Overlong, repetitive, clumsy and boring, it was everything the first two were not. I was so disappointed and couldn’t wait for it to be over. I thought the ending was actually pretty decent, but the las 45% leading up to that was bloody abysmal. Pass on this one!

Meandering, rambling and weak plot lines

Don't waste your time on this .. Maybe unless you are under 15 and into the twilight series. It attempts to take on a weird jumble of supernatural phenomena with no cohesive storyline. Characters are inconsistent and unfamiliar and the plot gives very limited depth.

My Favorite Novel of 2008

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 01-10-09

I picked up this title knowing nothing about Steig Larrson and desperately needing a new author. I'm so sad that this is his first novel! I'm already on the waiting list for his 2nd book, due out in the summer "The Girl Who Played With Fire"

This novel is colorful and vibrant with excellent characterization. There are very few "tells" that this is a new novelist and the story overpowers them easily.

Not only is the story compelling, but the narrator is exceptional. His tone and characterization are perfect and his pronunciation of the Swedish phrases cannot be faulted.

This is the first audiobook I have ever purchased that I've listened to twice - not only that, but I only bought it 3 weeks ago!! Buy it - you won't regret one minute of listening. The only downside is that, like me, you'll have to wait anxiously for the release of his second novel!

Sleeping Cruelty Audiobook By Lynda La Plante cover art

waste of time

Overall
1 out of 5 stars

I love Lynda la Plante - I have found all of her Trial and Retribution series to be compelling, convincing and exciting reading. Unfortunately not even the talents of the wonderful Christian Rodska can drag this tiresome, meandering, pathetic novel into the realm of the interesting. I listened to nearly all of it...and I'll never get those 10 hours back.

Compelling Murder Mystery

This is another solid effort from Ann Granger. Audible did well to add her to the list of authors.

Looking forward to listening to the rest of her titles - the reader is also a delight.

Enjoyable English Romp

I enjoyed this murder mystery although at times it was annoyingly read (a mentally ill woman in the book is portrayed in whiny girl tones throughout) A good mystery and I am looking forward to listening to more from Ann Granger.

The same all over again

Overall
1 out of 5 stars

I thought that the first Harlan Coben book (Tell No-one) I read was a little tiresome and predictable, but I thought I'd give him another chance based on the reviews of this title. Well, I should not have bothered. It was basically exactly the same story all over again, but even less interesting this time. Lose someone, always feel as though they are out there...yadda, yadda, you get the idea. Could be 1 chapter instead of a painfully long and tedious story with an annoyingly whiny lead character who does nothing but feel sorry for himself... spare me. If you like good escapist mystery read with complex characters and a good story line, my fail-safe recommendations would be Sue Grafton, John Sanford, James Patterson, Lillian Jackson Braun...anything, really, but this frustrating drivel.

Sue Grafton continues to deliver

Overall
5 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 12-10-06

As a fan of mystery writers such as James Patterson, John Sanford, P.D. James, and many others, Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone series is absolutely addictive. I started with "S is for Silence" and jumped around the alphabet quite considerably, finally filling in all the holes.

The reader expresses Kinsey Millhone's personality extremely well, and while each title in the series ranges from a good listen to brilliant, there's none that I regret purchasing. My only recommendation would be to start with "A" - I am sure it's much easier!

I am looking forward to "T" while at the same time dreading "Z"!

respectfully submitted,

Is it worth the wait?

Overall
3 out of 5 stars

This audiobook seems to drag interminably in the first three (yes, three!) hours. There is so much innuendo about "the time I left her hanging way deep out there in the dark" with the presumption of later clarification that I found myself growing not only bored, but irritated. I guess I don't have the patience of earlier reviewers!

Not up to Par

Overall
2 out of 5 stars

If you have loved the books in the Thursday Next series (as I have) then you may find yourself a little less thrilled in this installment. The development of the characters has seemed to stagnate, and aside from a couple of brilliant scenes in the book (including the ending!) the twists and turns are disappointingly predictable. I was also saddened to see that although we see more of Landon Park Lane in this book, his relationship with Thursday remains bland and his character is really not explored to any degree of depth. It must also be said that although books 2 and 3 in this series were exceptionally well read (I didn't listen to the Eyre Affair as it is abridged) this particular installment was unexceptional, being read by a new narrator. The original voice of Thursday Next held a great degree of energy and zing...there were many times in this novel that I felt myself wishing she would quit moaning and shut up. I also felt that the plot droned on and went in to too many weird directions. In the previous two novels, Thursday has a consistent mission (escaping Goliath and the Chronoguard, then the duties of Jurisfiction) and although she gets a little sidetracked here and there, it's all heading in the same general direction. I felt in this novel that the writer had a bunch of random ideas left over and decided to randomly chuck them all in together.
