The Missing Element in Storytelling
Reviewed: 10-31-24
After hearing these stories I was thinking that though there are many human stories to tell, the missing element in modern fiction is… God. Here, there are broken people, hurting people, but there is hope, and love, and sacrifice. This author has only been recently made known to me (though he was well known in his day) and I have found a richness in his writing that leaves you contemplating the people and ideas long after you have read about them.

Story
This is the story of two girls, one is a princess and the other is a daughter of a shepherd; both are spoiled and self-serving. Their lives are changed forever when they encounter the Wise Woman, who undertakes to teach them virtue with an astounding balance of grace and truth. Firm and loving, the Wise Woman is everything a good parent could hope to be, and a refreshing portrayal of the Heavenly Parent in us all.

An (Unknown?)Treasure
Reviewed: 10-29-24
I called this an unknown treasure because I had never known of this author before but it is accurate to say that he writes for those “of any age who are childlike, whether 5 or 75”— as a grandmother, I think many children would benefit from these stories, which reveal deep truths and promote good character in anyone who is open to it. I knew of C.S.Lewis and his Narnia stories for children, but now I put George MacDonald right up there with him!

The Death of Ivan Ilyich

Story
Leo Tolstoy is quite simply one of the greatest writers to ever set pen to paper. Immortalized by such epic novels as War and Peace and Anna Karenina, Tolstoy's genius was also readily apparent in his short fiction. The Death of Ivan Ilych follows the career of the unremarkable title character, who does not question his desire to live an "easy, agreeable, gay and always decorous" life, until he is lying on his death bed.

Life and Death, Despair and Hope
Reviewed: 06-09-24
I don’t want to give too much away but this short story is deep and asks the most important question: what is life all about? That is the question that most people do not stop to ask because they are too busy and distracted to slow down and consider… but it’s best to settle it while there is still time— Ivan had to struggle with it as his illness progressed & death was imminent. Read and find out his ultimate answer.

Thoughtful read if you’re married without a perfect marriage…

I’m amazed at how accurately the author can write dialogue between married couples (& children)! Parts of the story really made you think and I was actually surprised at the ending— Highly recommend!

Basic

This basic explanation of what the U.S.A. is founded on, while clearly written for children, should be given to the average public school student of any age since these simple facts are often unknown by them since no one taught them.
