About this listen

George MacDonald was the great 19th-century innovator of modern fantasy who influenced the work of C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams. This book collects some of his finest fairy stories, including:

"The Gray Wolf"
"The Cruel Painter"
"The Broken Swords"
"The Wow O'Rivven, the Bell"
"Uncle Cornelius, His Story"
"The Butcher's Bills"
"Birth, Dreaming, Death"

"I do not write," MacDonald once said, "for children, but for the childlike, whether of five, or 50, or 75." Here then, for the childlike of all ages, is a collection of seven stories certain to delight both confirmed MacDonald listeners and those about to meet him for the first time.

I wanted to know a little more at the end of each story but I'm not entirely sure that was a bad thing. Good stuff!

All the stories are extremely uplifting irrespective of whether it involves tragedy or celebration. The stories are very engaging and insightful.

I love this author and narrator.

After hearing these stories I was thinking that though there are many human stories to tell, the missing element in modern fiction is… God. Here, there are broken people, hurting people, but there is hope, and love, and sacrifice. This author has only been recently made known to me (though he was well known in his day) and I have found a richness in his writing that leaves you contemplating the people and ideas long after you have read about them.

Recording seemed uninspired and very outdated. Audio quality was very poor. Will go back and read the book instead.
