A helpful and intriguing overview
Reviewed: 09-27-22
Gavin floods discussion while short provides a helpful and concise overview of the various tantric traditions, mainly Shaiva-Shakta and Buddhist tantric tradition and positions them within the broader tantric tradition as a whole.
I learned some unique things about the Shaiva tradition I was unaware of through my other studies. Definitely worth a listen!

Great starter course

Very informative with great narration
Reviewed: 07-17-19
James Mallinson is clearly very versed in the history and tradition of Hatha Yoga. This is conveyed in his ease of narration and the conversational style in which this presentation is delivered.
If you are interested in the non-linear history of how the practice has evolved as many traditions merging, then this will do you well.

Stormlight >= Warbreaker > Elantris > Mistborn

Another great story by Sanderson. Really great characters and I quite enjoyed the author’s notes and deleted scenes in the 10th anniversary edition. Not my favorite narrator, but I got used to him by the end of the book. He sounds a bit like a cliche movie trailer voice actor to me (though others seem to really like him).
There is something very satisfying about this being a stand alone novel. I can’t wait to see how Sanderson ties this story into the rest of the commerce when and if we eventually get crossover books.
In my opinion, not quite as good as Stormlight or Warbreaker, but better than Mistborn which are all really good books.

Sets the stage

Dawn of Wonder gets off to a somewhat slow start that I almost considered stopping at several points. If you’re looking for quick and cheap entertainment, this isn’t the book. Like someone else said, it is slow to reveal its secrets.
It seems very clear that this book is basically about character development and setting the plot for the next which I can’t wait to read. That is not to say that it doesn’t have its high points and excitement.
I’m really glad I stuck it out because in the end I really enjoyed this book. It has a Jordan-esque feel to it in its scope.

Not great, but worthy and refreshing.

Not a fan of the narration on this one. The narrator follows a very predictable pattern of pauses that are often inappropriate for the content. The writing is generally done well, however, and there are a few good tips and meditation practices. This is a good resource to enhance your knowledge or collection but by no means is it an authority or full manual.
Overall it is a good read with colorful descriptions and some information you don’t here most places. For the price and short length I would definitely purchase again and will probably relisten at some point.

Story
In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy.
