About this listen

In 2005, Brandon Sanderson debuted with Elantris, an epic fantasy unlike any other then on the market. To celebrate its tenth anniversary, Tor is reissuing Elantris in a special edition, a fresh chance to introduce it to the myriad readers who have since become Sanderson fans.

This new edition begins with a preface by author Dan Wells, the first person to read the completed novel, and a new afterword by Sanderson explaining how he came to write the book and its place in the Cosmere, the unified universe of all his Tor novels.

Also included is an expanded version of the "Ars Arcanum" appendix, with more of the technical details of the book's magic that fans can never get enough of.

Elantris was truly a milestone both for Sanderson and for the genre of epic fantasy. It deserves this special treatment, something Tor has done only once before, with Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. Sanderson fans old and new will be excited to discover it.

Editor's Pick

This made me appreciate having super powers
"Even with his debut novel, Sanderson knew what he was doing when it came to world-building. The concept is so fascinating: a city of leper-like people who are cursed with no power to heal from any injury. Unlike a lot of fantasy novels out there, this story is about overcoming adversity with a truly major handicap. It really made me appreciate the abilities I have as an able-bodied human. I mean, in a way, isn’t the ability to heal a really cool power that we all have?"

Excellent book, fanatic narration.

Jack Garrett does an excellent job capturing the essences of the characters. He overlaps a few of the voices, but I didn't want to stop listening. Sanderson hit it out of the park with this book, and I love how the characters aren't so overtly powerful (I.e. Mistborn, Knight Radiant, etc...) from the start or midway going through trials with these abilities. While I prefer those stories, it was captivating seeing a large portion of the book focused on struggle rather than ability.

Ebook Elantris review.

Slow going in the beginning but I stuck with it. After a while I enjoyed the story.

Get the written book

The story is amazing, but the narrator only has like 3 voices he can use, and it quickly gets confusing.

Great first book

I highly recommend this as an intro to Sanderson and as a stand alone. It's funny, bright, and mysterious. Now I'm hooked.

Stop me when this sounds familiar....

A young princess who is brash, constantly in trouble, and trying to help save her family/country.
A "lost" religion that on one understands, with secret powers that no one can control.
A prince who is noble and trying to protect EVERYONE.
A nobility that is more concerned with wealth and power than protecting their people.
An author who is afraid to kill off any of the main characters.

I enjoyed the Stormlight books a lot, and I might have enjoyed this book if I had read them first. But I really felt like it was all the same characters and plot lines again, just a lot shorter. That being said I did enjoy the book overall.

The narration was good, not great, but each character was distinctive, even if the performance as a whole was a little flat.

Entertaining, thought provoking, downright solid

I went through this story after completing Sanderson's first Mistborn Trilogy. This one was a little different for sure. It's not necessarily slower, but it's not faster. Sanderson does a great job at making all of the content important and leaves me feeling like if I removed any part of the story it wouldn't be as good. I love that this one seems a little simpler although it's not and i also love the chilled out vibe i get from it too. It gives you time to process what you've read and enjoy some characters and their home life, story, etc instead of tirelessly pushing to the saving of the universe.

Also, after finishing the book I started to notice a lot of real world similarities to the Elantris. Elantris is very similar to our lives in the differing religions, governments, etc while none of them being the clear and definite "right one". Very interesting and I'm so glad I listened to it.

A slow start with a strong finish

Do not sleep on this book. The first 5 or so hours felt very slow. I wanted to put it down and move on to something else, but I knew Sanderson had a reputation for strong fourth quarters in his novels. Elantris was no exception. I started to enjoy it more and more until suddenly I was on the edge of my seat and couldn’t stop listening. I am so glad I kept with it, because the second half was magical.

Great main characters

Plenty of magic related storyline with colorful characters. Happy ending with some tragedy. Different type of love story mixed in lightly. Strong male and female characters.
