Publisher's summary

In 2005, Brandon Sanderson debuted with Elantris, an epic fantasy unlike any other then on the market. To celebrate its tenth anniversary, Tor is reissuing Elantris in a special edition, a fresh chance to introduce it to the myriad readers who have since become Sanderson fans.

This new edition begins with a preface by author Dan Wells, the first person to read the completed novel, and a new afterword by Sanderson explaining how he came to write the book and its place in the Cosmere, the unified universe of all his Tor novels.

Also included is an expanded version of the "Ars Arcanum" appendix, with more of the technical details of the book's magic that fans can never get enough of.

Elantris was truly a milestone both for Sanderson and for the genre of epic fantasy. It deserves this special treatment, something Tor has done only once before, with Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. Sanderson fans old and new will be excited to discover it.

Editor's Pick

This made me appreciate having super powers
"Even with his debut novel, Sanderson knew what he was doing when it came to world-building. The concept is so fascinating: a city of leper-like people who are cursed with no power to heal from any injury. Unlike a lot of fantasy novels out there, this story is about overcoming adversity with a truly major handicap. It really made me appreciate the abilities I have as an able-bodied human. I mean, in a way, isn’t the ability to heal a really cool power that we all have?"

Narrator was great!

The narration by Jack Garrett takes the cake! Not that the story was lacking at all but the narration kept me drawn in during the dry parts of the novel. I also love how the overall story felt whole to me. I could tell it was very carefully thought out and constructed.

Enjoyed the journey!

Great Story. Was interested all the way through. Narration was good. Even when you think you know what's coming, you are left with some hesitation allowing the narration to take you on the journey. The uncertainty prevents one from jumping ahead of the author and gettting bored. Good pacing. Strongly recommend.

Best Fantasy Novel. Period.

This should go down as one of the greatest stand alone fantasy novels in the history of literature. Believe me.

great sanderson book, but...

if you are coming to Elantris from Stormlight or Mistborn, know that this book is from early in Sanderson's career, and as he says in the epilogue section 'his prose and environmental style have greatly improved'. Hands down it is a great story, cool characters and a good magic system, just less well written than his later books

Enjoyed this immensely!

This is one I will remember for a long time, the story and the characters captured my imagination. I kept finding myself waiting with anticipation for my next available time to be able to listen. the only reason I did is not give the performance five stars overall was because sometimes there needed to be gaps in the narration to signal changes in scene, but I got used to it. I enjoyed the reader and everything about this book. I am now going to look for other books by this author, I imagine I will enjoy them as much as I did this. I am one happy listener!

A piece of a larger vision

This story has a good mix of philosophy, action, and some moral character ambiguity. Everyone is dedicated to doing what they think is right given their knowledge and circumstances. In the end you have to rethink your first impressions.

This isn't to say this is flawless. Why the Kaloo disguise? How did the other Elantrians know Aons when all they ever did was watch? These are minor things and don't necessarily distract from the story.

Overall it is a solid story.

Fantastic

I typically only listen to books when I am driving to and from work. I know the book has really captivated me when I sit in the parking lot continuing to listen because I am in a great part.

Loved the book - wish there was a follow on.

narrator leaves something to be desired

His voices broke my immersion for a good chunk of the book. Story was show to start but entertaining regardless. Characters jumped straight to love in quick arcs with romcom level mishaps pushing back but otherwise had believable characters. The hint of a bigger magic system was tantalizing.

My Favorite

This has to be the best Sanderson book I have read so far and I have read both Mistborn and all of the Stormlight Archive to date as well as some of his short stories. I love the characters and the simple yet compelling story that this book has. Others will hate on the simplicity of the characters and the story but I found it oddly refreshing after reading about the trouble pasts of the characters in his other books. I love it and you should read this if you haven’t! The narration is not my favorite but you get used to it after a while and overall the narrator does a good job.
