Story
In this Richard Jury adventure, Martha Grimes takes listeners to Ashdown Dean, a little English village where animals are dying in a series of seemingly innocuous accidents. While the puzzling deaths of village pets may raise some idle gossip over a pint or two at the Deer Leap, the village pub, this hardly seems a case for Superintendent Jury of Scotland yard. Nor does it seem much of a challenge for the combined deductive powers of Jury and Melrose, the affable former Earl of Caverness.

This one is NOT cozy
Reviewed: 06-19-25
Generally I find these books nice little escapes with interesting characters and nothing too terribly upsetting. This particular book has interesting characters and is good but is not one of the cozier books. I quite liked some of the introduced characters. There is some animal cruelty in the book just fyi. I definitely said WTF at the ending not in a fun twist sort of way either. I dont only read cozy books I like some darker grittier content but this left me annoyed. I looked at other reviews after and apparently Im not the only one. The next book’s ending may be abrupt too like the author gets fed up writing them. Its such a long running series I assume it picks up the pace again at some point. As always excellent narration.

Cozy and fun but I miss the old narrator
Reviewed: 12-31-24
Another delightful cozy mystery packed with colorful characters and twists and turns. Nothing that will make you think too hard and a great way to relax.
I do miss the old narrator, its always sad when they change mid series and while this new one isnt bad she doesnt seem to really capture the characters well or be able to differentiate so many voices and personalities. Her habit of reading much of the test in a breathy whisper caused my husband to stop listening entirely. If I didnt have a backlog of credits id probably skip the next audio version and get the next book in paperback.

Though I, Timmy Failure, have solved many notorious crimes and now wish to enjoy my retirement, my fans have begged me to turn my memoirs into a movie, an ode to my greatness. I am, however, beset by enemies, the worst of whom is Tom John John, the buffoonish movie director. What’s more, my father is in town, working at a bar, which is obviously just a cover for our father-son crime-fighting partnership. And my dimwitted polar bear business partner, Total, wants to be reunited with his family.

Delightful Cozy Mystery
Reviewed: 07-19-24
This is a just such a perfect book to curl up with and forget the drama of the world. The narration is excellent and combined with the story creates a warm little world of with marvelous characters. The mystery is of the classic variety, nothing too taxing or dark but fun til the end. I loved the details of village life, dog and cat and miss busby is a dynamic protagonist. I just bought and look forward to the next one. After that, as the narrator is so good, I may buy another book she’s done just to listen to her some more.

Insipid Story with Insufferable main character
Reviewed: 05-07-24
Narrator did a marvelous job really the only reason I kept reading but the first book is just the main character being an increasingly terrible self important entitled person and facing very little in the way of consequences. “Whoops I ruined lives but ill fix it by doing more of the exact same thing that ruined lives.” It was like someone made the most annoying person with main character syndrome an actual main character. The Mystery itself was limited and incredibly predictable but it was cozy and the other characters are cute. the setting and side characters are good. I would not say its historical more historically stylized (it makes Bridgeton look like a documentary in comparison), not that that is an issue with this type of novel. Honestly it’s just a shame you have to sit through so many chapters of the main character being obviously wrong and behaving obnoxiously because the rest is cute.

Story
Shabby and lumbering, with a face like a Norfolk dumpling, Father Brown makes for an improbable super-sleuth. But his innocence is the secret of his success: refusing the scientific method of detection, he adopts instead an approach of simple sympathy, interpreting each crime as a work of art, and each criminal as a man no worse than himself… Here you will find the complete Father Brown stories in the chronological order of their original publication. The Innocence of Father Brown Starts at Chapter 1, The Wisdom of Father Brown Starts at Chapter 13.

Not very good mysteries
Reviewed: 11-07-23
Ive been reading all the major authors from this era and genre but these arent very well crafted and feel lazy. Also after getting a few stories in even for the era a ton of racism increasing throughout the books. It’s something you expect from the time but this is a lot and varied and isnt just older language but utterly dehumanizing.
Narration is good and with feeling but not a variety of voices.

Really Informative, but not a critical history
Reviewed: 01-02-18
The Professor tries to take a middle ground, but there is no missing his bias, especially in the later lectures. The bias isn’t really an issue, as the rosy tint to his perspective is hard to miss but he does gloss over or avoid completely some of the major issues caused by colonial rule. I’d have preferred he acknowledged the bias and spend at least one chapter really confronting some of the muckier and more complex issues. Perhaps he felt that was beyond the scope of this lectures series but considering there are chapters focusing on literature and one on cricket, I believe he could have delved a little deeper. That said (and it is a big that considering the impact continues today) this is a fabulous listen and the lens of empire is a really usefully way to examine history and the present world situation. This will be an absolutely fascinating lectures for lovers of American history who have only heard it taught in the rather disconnected way that is common in many American schools, and that for some reason almost completely leaves out Canada. I highly enjoyed this lecture series and would recommend it.
