About this listen

The third installment in the beloved and New York Times bestselling series from Richard Osman, also author of We Solve Murders

“The quartet of aging amateur sleuths…remain wonderful company.” —
The New York Times Book Review

It is an ordinary Thursday, and things should finally be returning to normal. Except trouble is never far away where the Thursday Murder Club are concerned. A decade-old cold case—their favorite kind--leads them to a local news legend and a murder with no body and no answers.

Then a new foe pays Elizabeth a visit. Her mission? Kill or be killed. Suddenly the cold case has become red hot.

While Elizabeth wrestles with her conscience (and a gun), Joyce, Ron, and Ibrahim chase down the clues with help from old friends and new. But can the gang solve the mystery and save Elizabeth before the murderer strikes again?

From an upmarket spa to a prison cell complete with espresso machine to a luxury penthouse high in the sky, this third adventure of the Thursday Murder Club is full of the cleverness, intrigue, and irresistible charm that readers have come to expect from Richard Osman’s bestselling series.

Critic reviews

“Osman concocts a satisfyingly complex whodunit full of neat twists and wrong turns. But unlike most crime novelists, he ensures his book’s strength and momentum stem not from its plot or its thrills but rather its perfectly formed characters. Once again, the quartet of friends makes for delightful company… Heartwarming and enthralling. ‘They carried a kind of magic, the four of them,’ a policeman muses. That magic is still there in abundance.”—Washington Post

The Bullet That Missed hits on every front. Its quandaries stymie, its solutions thrill, its banter is worth reciting and its characters exemplify an admirable camaraderie. One can only hope that the Thursday Murder Club’s next outing appears before long.”—Wall Street Journal

“The Thursday Murder Club is back, and that should make everyone happy—except, of course, murderers. Richard Osman's engaging series about a group of crime-solving retirees has delighted readers since the first book. The Thursday Murder Club, an international bestseller, was funny, original, baffling, poignant and thoroughly engaging. That's a high bar to set from the get-go, but Osman has easily achieved it in subsequent books… This book is as delightful as the others. A remarkable achievement, Osman up there effortlessly balancing on that very high bar.”—Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Why Change Narrators?

Lesley Manville was the most amazing narrator and I was VERY disappointed with the new narrator. She could not create the character with her voice and manner in the same way that Lesley Manville did, so that took away some of my enjoyment in the book. Please get her back for book four!

The reader is very difficult to hear

Although we enjoy the Thursday Murder Club series, I would not recommend listening to them in a car. Trying to make out the reader’s words whenever she dropped into a whisper (which was all too frequent) became maddening. This was with the volume turned all the way up.

Another fun tale, but challenging narration

Clever, engaging story.
The narrator was difficult to understand when she did Joyce's voice as well as some of the general narration. She did those parts at barely above a whisper, and I had to strain to understand.

Great Story - Poor Narration

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The narrator failed to differentiate the accents and characters. Disappointing.

Change Narrator PLEASE

Huge fan of Thursday murder club! Great book. The first two especially. HOWEVER, I had to buy the Kindle version of book three and four! Now I try and find time to read versus listen because I cannot handle even one chapter of this new narrator!!
As a many years audible subscriber, I really hope that the author and team read the reviews and understand they should re-record three and four with the previous narrator. Excellent books and concept, but audible versions need the support of a great narrator to keep it authentic. I’m sorry.

Good story bad reader

The reader is terrible and super hard to hear at times. I will not continue to purchase these if she continues reading.

Bummer

I love Fiona Shaw as an actress. But this reading sounded like she recorded herself practicing her first run-through in her closet, then submitted it as the final version. She whispers half the words for no reason I can figure, rushing through paragraphs all in one breath, not placing emphasis anywhere. There is also no differentiation among the characters’ voices—no accent, tone of voice, or personality. This is extra confusing when multiple characters have POV across the book. Lesley Manville was the perfect narrator for this series, and I really had no idea how spoiled I was by her perfect delivery. But I found this book much less enjoyable, and upon thinking about the story itself, I don’t think the problem is in the plot. It was really in the subpar narration. I’m very disappointed to see that Fiona is returning for Book 4. A huge piece of my enjoyment of this series has been lost.

disappointed with change in narrator

I started the 3rd book immediately after finishing the 2nd. I really loved the story and narration of the 1st 2 books. I was so disappointed when the 3rd book started playing. I really struggled with the change for the first few chapters. Thankfully, the story was still good, and after time, I adjusted to the new narrator. That being said, I still don't like her as well as the 1st one. Like others, I didn't understand why she"whispered" the lines so often. So, I still love the stories, but I would really prefer the 1st narrator again!

another good one - great comfort listening

I loved everything except hard to hear stage whispered personal accounts. I had to raise and lower volume in order to follow the plot. I loved previous reader. This reader terrific in every other way.
