I missed seeing the notice that this is the abridged version. Too much of the story is left out.

Story
After his town is put to the sword and the children are taken to replace the fallen, an old man is out for revenge. He’s ready to fail at the most difficult challenge in the world: cultivation. Too corrupted to even take the first steps, the sly old elder simply agreed with those who told him that it was impossible. Then, he quietly ignored them, rubbed his hands together, and started anyway. He had always failed in what he did. The only thing that had never failed him was his sharp mind and philosophy. He would cultivate...no matter what it cost him.

info dump not much action
Reviewed: 07-06-20
I am more than halfway through this book. There was a decent introduction to the characters. A bit of action put the characters in jeopardy. Now there is seemingly endless info dump. I will finish this one but probably not invest time in another of this series.

Still trying to finish

So, our hero has amazing mental and physical abilities. He has been trained by masters to blend into any social strata from humble farmer to nobleman. At the first village he comes to, it is revealed that he does not know that females wear dresses. He has, in fact, never met a female. I am tempted to finish just to see what other gaping holes are in his education.

DNF Could not get past first few chapters
Reviewed: 07-02-19
So I was in the mood for a light read and this would have fit the bill. Our hero is an IT guy, who understands gaming. I was amazed that two women were introduced in the first chapters. One actually being in charge. She falls apart at the first sign of danger forcing him to take command. The other is included to fall for him and give him a love interest. I might give this another chance. The writing isn’t that bad.

I loved this story and was really looking forward to listening to it. The narrator was a bad choice. She kept gasping for breath at the end of almost every sentence.

Story
My name is Alice Long, and I've always known I was different. When I was little I used to climb up to the highest branches of the housetree at night, and watch the starships docking at the orbital stations high above. Forty meters off the ground, watching ships 30,000 kilometers overhead, with senses that could pick out radar pings and comm chatter as easily as the ships themselves. It all seemed perfectly natural at the time.

Mary Sue in space DNF
Reviewed: 05-08-18
This book’s heroes is a genetically modified 14 year old Mary Sue. Each time she is in peril, her modifications get her out of it. The world building is interesting, but very slanted to the male as ruler / woman as subservient. The author puts his 14 year old protagonist into many sexual situations from straight through lesbian and onto to furry. Nothing explicit happens, but yech, she is a child. The strong female characters were androids with a code that made them ‘need’ a master. Most females had animal morphs. I really couldn’t finish.

They came after the Diseray. Some were terrors ripped from our collective imaginations, remnants of every mythology across the world. And some were like nothing anyone had ever dreamed up, even in their worst nightmares. Now, the luckiest Cits live in enclosed communities, behind walls that keep them safe from the hideous monsters fighting to break through.

I like most of Mercedes` books so much that I bought them in hardcover. She can linger on character introductions and do a bit of info dumping, so, I kept waiting for the action to happen here. I could not finish this this book. Maybe the book gets better in the latter chapters. I doubt that our heroine could possibly get better or more incredible than she does not realize she really for sure is. I won't be buying this one. I might give it another try in a few months and see if I was just not in the right mood.

I really like this story, but the narrator had a droning voice that took quite a lot to get used to. I have read the books and am happy that are in audiobook format.
