Story
In a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, the shooter, Omar Mateen, murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others. The attack was the deadliest act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in US history and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11. But there’s a story you haven’t heard. The FBI had a secret history with the shooter and his father. To obscure that history, the FBI pushed a false story that the media dutifully carried—that the attacker was a secretly gay Islamist extremist who had chosen to target Pulse and planned the attack for weeks.

Another (perhaps true) Point of View
Reviewed: 08-04-24
While at times there were long empty pauses or breaks in speech /sentences cut in half by awkward silence, I found by speeding up the reading speed, the narrator talked in a more normal speed.
In terms of the information, a different point of view regarding the murderer & background knowledge regarding his father & his involvement with the FBI, in a some-what organized timeline. At times, parts did repeat and I was confused thinking the Audible app somehow went back a chapter or two, only to realize the info & sounds were just being repeated again,

Story
"My father had more than 50 children." So begins the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. With her father wanted by the FBI for killing anyone who tried to leave his cult - a radical branch of Mormonism - Anna and her siblings were constantly on the run with the other sister-wives. Often starving and always desperate, the children lived in terror. Even though there were dozens of them together, Anna always felt alone.

Well-written account of her childhood trauma
Reviewed: 09-25-23
Overall, it is a well-written account of her childhood trauma & the everlasting effects. At times, I was nervous for her, always grasping to the hope that she could escape the cult her father/family forced her to be a part of.
I gave 4 stars since the “performance,” was a slowly read book that sounded at times, computer read. I kept the speed at 1.2 to have a normal pace. Often, the read sentences sounded programmed, broken up as if a computer was reading them, not a person.

A Must Listen for the Grieving

Great speaker who intertwines comedy and grief
Reviewed: 09-23-23
Intriguing to say the least, interesting take on science making our views on grief change over the years (and I agree with him). I love how he takes an almost taboo topic in today’s society and adds comedy to explore it, adding personal stories that are typically a sad thought, but surprises you with a comedic take on it.

Story
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

When child neglect creates resilience
Reviewed: 06-21-23
A heart wrenching story of extreme child neglect from an alcoholic father and a free-spirit, bipolar mother who prefers absolute freedom and her own happiness over working a steady job to provide even the most basic necessities for her children. This is a story of how children are affected by all aspects of their parents actions, or lack of actions.
I applaud the author for her personal growth, and being able to even withstand sitting next to her mother after decades of neglect & for allowing sexual abuse to occur, for not being a parent. When both continued to repeatedly fail her, she ventured out on her own, standing tall & persevering.

Well-written Intriguing Stories
Reviewed: 03-14-23
I have a thing for Dateline crime stories :) They typically are very well paced, have intriguing story plots, and are great one-hour (maybe a bit more) stories I can listen to while working around the house. The only thing I have noticed is during almost every one of them, there’s a point where they are looking at something, showing something in person to the interviewer and it’s not described to listeners that aren’t there (or watching a video) to see it.

A Heartfelt Memoir
Reviewed: 02-14-23
I always look for novels read by the author since it adds to the understanding & emotions they truly felt. This book is an emotional memory of a journey that started from birth, allowing us to see that harsh words to neglect, from those that are supposed to love & care for us, can cause long term damage- but it doesn’t have to be forever. James overcame his childhood trauma & built a life he should be proud of.
Thank you for your amazing contributions to helping us rebuild our communities in a more positive light, James.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”
