Story
"It's the most wonderful time of the year," the old song tells us. But that doesn't mean the people celebrating it are always so nice. Criminals get the Christmas spirit, too! In this collection of hilarious short stories, you'll see what the thieves, killers, psychos and scumbags are up to come the holidays...and it's not caroling door to door. Well, not unless they're casing the neighborhood for a break-in, as a rag-tag gang does in the title story.

Christmas Story Perfection!
Reviewed: 12-13-24
I loved the wide variety of characters of each of the stories. With most short story collections I've read there's usually one or two not so great ones but there were none in this. Each was equally witty and has the signature Hockensmith humor that makes his stories and novels so delightful. I will add this book to my new annual Christmas story reading tradition.

Excellent collection of short stories! I can't pick a favorite of them. They're all equally unique and have twists I didn't expect. I haven't read all the HOMES ON THE RANGE stories, so if you haven't either this seems like it'll be fine to read. However, I will be reading the rest of the series.

I loved it from beginning to end. The narration of each band member having their say really showed different perspectives on events that took place. It also had some heartbreaking moments. All around a great listen. I will definitely relisten to The Dirt.

Story
When Dr. Louis Creed takes a new job and moves his family to the idyllic, rural town of Ludlow, Maine, this new beginning seems too good to be true. Yet despite Ludlow's tranquility, there's an undercurrent of danger that lingers...like the graveyard in the woods near the Creeds' home, where generations of children have buried their beloved pets.

From start to finish I read intrigued and amazed by Hall's performance. He nailed every character's emotion, Maine accent and kept me wanting more. I didn't want the book to end. He made it as terrifying as the first time I read it as a child. I recommend this book with flying colours!

Most people want to avoid thinking about death, but Caitlin Doughty - a 20-something with a degree in medieval history and a flair for the macabre - took a job at a crematory, turning morbid curiosity into her life’s work. With an original voice that combines fearless curiosity and mordant wit, Caitlin tells an unusual coming-of-age story full of bizarre encounters, gallows humor, and vivid characters (both living and very dead).

A true inspiring and insightful tale of a young woman making her way in a difficult industry. I found her persistence heartwarming and was touched by her personal stories from childhood. Be warned some of the cremation descriptions can be graphic for the more sensitive folks--she also gives this warning. This book shows that people who work in the funeral industry are not creepy ghouls. They're people who care. This book was well narrated to where I felt like I was sitting next to her friend to friend. This one is a repeat listen.

Fabulous! Perfection with Full Cast!
Reviewed: 03-03-17
Tim Curry did a sensational job of narration. I picked this one up because he is one of my favourite actors. Normally I don't care for full cast recordings because of the distracting background sounds and noise which makes it difficult for me to hear pieces of the dialogue. But this was very easy on the ears. It was clear and extremely well done. And the additional sound effects were tastefully placed. I just hope there are more from this series!

Four decades after it first shook the nation, then the world, William Peter Blatty's thrilling masterwork of faith and demonic possession returns in an even more powerful form. Must Read For Wonderland Fans of ALL Ages!
Reviewed: 10-12-11
I was a little reluctant to select this book due to the altered perspective of the original story. Being as it may the story has more of a base of the Alice in Wonderland Tim Burton film but it is written in such a way that you grow to have sympathy for the characters and are completely drawn in! I couldn't wait to hear what happened to dear Wonderland under the tyrannical rule of the Red Queen and if Alice found her way back home. The reading by Mr. Gerald Doyle, is exquisite and has few minimal sound effects to enhance the reading experience. But most amusing was when Mr. Doyle performs the sound effects verbally! It really made the story a true joy. This is an excellent book for all ages (young and old). I highly recommend this and I will definitely proceed to the next in the series.
